CD#84 #TheBluetones self titled album from 2006. It rang very few bells as I listened through. So tried again. Nope. It’s not particularly brilliant. Saying that, Head On A Spike is quite cool, and My Neighbours House is catchy enough. Towering above the rest: the very lovely Hope And Jump.

CD#83 #TheBluetones #Luxembourg this 2003 album was slated in some reviews. It is, admittedly, inconsistent and not up to previous standards, but some of the reviews seemed personal. So, more indie pop rock… highlights being Never Going Nowhere, Fast Boy, You’re No Fun Anymore.

2002 compilation gathering the singles & 4 new songs. It put a big full stop on the band. Or like a line in the sand. After this, their profile dropped and dropped. The new songs are merely OK. After Hours being the best of them. A nice compilation & with a 2nd disk.

CD#81 #TheBluetones #ScienceAndNature released in 2000. Another album full of great songs. Mudslide, Basement Song, Autophilia, Home Fires - all superb. I saw them play this in full somewhere in London and Mark looked very fetching in a lab coat. Leaning into the science I guess.

CD#80 #TheBluetones #4DayWeekend 1998 single from Last Chance Saloon. Has a couple of cover versions: Mr Soul (Buffalo Springfield) and Pretty Ballerina (Left Banke). The latter is preceded by a jazzy improv which I’ve seen them do live. PB is great. I’ve heard better covers of Mr Soul.

CD#79 #TheBluetones #ReturnToTheLastChanceSaloon released in 1998, it’s my favourite of their albums. The hit rate is high: If, UTA, Sleazy Bed Track, Ames, Reservoir, 4-Day Weekend, Solomon etc. Got lukewarm reviews, which I didn’t understand. It’s a bluesy bold step forward from the debut.

CD#78 #TheBluetones #SolomonBitesTheWorm a 1998 CD single. Song has that classic ‘name the days of the week’ thing going on. It’s great, and a bit more bluesy than previous releases. B-side I Was A Teenage Jesus is standard fare. I Walked All Night is a blast though. Lots of fun with the vocals.

CD#77 #TheBluetones #MarbleheadJohnson this 1996 non-album single is (in my mind) their finest moment. Wonderful tune with great lyrics. I find myself singing this all the time. The b-sides are above average (esp. Nifkins Bridge). And then a surprise: Are You Blue appears uncredited. A classic!

CD#76 #TheBluetones #CutSomeRug 1996 single from the debut. It’s a good song, but I obviously bought this to hear the b-sides: Castle Rock & The Devil Behind My Smile. The former is a bit start/stop with a forgettable tune, the 2nd is bolder with prominent phaser effects, but a definite b-side.

CD#74 #TheBluetones #Bluetonic CD single from 1995 released prior to their debut album. Such a great song. This is a band that I still go & see if they’re playing somewhere near me. Impeccable melodies, smart lyrics. The b-sides are Colorado Beetle and Glad To See Y’Back Again. Neither are top tier.
