A black and white illustration of a Mojave desert tortoise. The tortoise is standing up tall on its legs in front of a puddle of water. Light, sketchy lines in the background give the impression of a desert environment with a few tall grasses.
Mojave desert tortoises depend on taking periodic drinks of water from unreliable rainstorms for hydration. Because of this, they can tolerate extremely high conc. of solutes in their bodies when water is scarce -- a state known as anhomeostasis.
