It's supposed to drown out your morals and inhibitions, but here's my headcanon: Ren meditates to hold back her worst impulses of people who push her around on the regular, giving her more restraint over the mask's influence...to a degree where she only causes non-lethal/non-fatal mischief to those who truly deserve it. She has to meditate before she puts it on, when allowed the free time. It's dangerous to put it on when she's in too much of a rush to meditate.
