Also, what I'm noticing is that it doesn't even let the scares play out fully. The body is missing, that discovery immediately gets interrupted by a phone call. Things start flowing off shelves, we switch to another scene where things are calm. Like, what's the point?

Like, the movie needs to be a slower burn with an actual plot. The game has randomized elements to keep you interested while you are performing the same tasks, but the randomness of it all doesn't work here. You want your audience to understand what's going on.
