Just like butterflies, they can't breed on nectar alone. A moth visits your flowers, feeds for a few minutes, then flies to the one specific plant where it can lay eggs. If that plant isn't in your yard, the entire next generation happens somewhere else. Most pollinator gardens are moth cafés — they feed adults but don't support reproduction. - Luna Moths visit many flowers for nectar — but they lay eggs on willow, birch, and sweetgum. Caterpillars feed on those leaves and nothing else. No host tree in the yard, no Luna Moths emerging from cocoons in your trees - Sphinx moths visit coneflowers and moonflowers at dusk — but they breed on tomato and tobacco family plants. The tomato hornworm in your garden is a sphinx moth caterpillar. The larval stage of one of the most important night pollinators on the continent - Hundreds of moth species depend on native cherry and plum trees for caterpillar development. A single wild cherry supports more moth reproduction than a large area of nectar flowers alone - Oaks host more caterpillar species than any other tree in North America — well over four hundred. If you have one oak, you already have a moth nursery whether you know it or not - The Promethea Silk Moth — one of the largest and most striking native moths — needs sassafras or spicebush leaves to complete its lifecycle. No substitute - Viceroy moth caterpillars develop on poplar and aspen. The adults mimic Monarch butterflies for predator protection, but the caterpillars need poplar family leaves and nothing else will do 🌿 What this means for your yard: - If your porch light never attracts large moths in summer, the missing piece probably isn't the light — it's the host trees. Nectar flowers bring adults through. Host trees make them stay and reproduce - Native trees do more for moth populations than any flower bed can — one oak or one wild cherry changes the moth community in your yard more than a dozen nectar plants

Moths pollinate more plants than butterflies. They work the night shift, visit more species, and outnumber butterflies roughly ten to one in most backyards.

Interesting. #TheOutpost youtu.be/zRgUoRdyJFU?...
That spiky black thing crawling on your rosebush isn't eating your roses. It's eating everything that is. That tiny alligator-looking creature — half an inch long, black body, orange spots, six spiky legs — is a ladybug larva. Same species. Same animal. Just hasn't transformed yet. And right now, it's doing more work than the cute red adult ever will. A single larva eats roughly four hundred aphids before it pupates. The adult? Around fifty a day. The larva is the hungrier version — growing constantly, fueling a full-body metamorphosis, unable to fly away from the buffet. It just sits on your stem and eats every soft-bodied pest it can reach. The problem is what it looks like. Most people see it and reach for a shoe. One squish. Four hundred aphids that would have been gone — now thriving. 🌿 How to help them do their job: - Learn the shape — small, dark, spiky, six legs, moving fast along stems - If it's on a plant covered in aphids, it's hunting them - Skip the pesticide spray on plants where you spot larvae — it kills them too - Leave aphid clusters alone for a few days and watch what shows up That ugly little creature on your leaf is about to become the prettiest bug in your garden. It just needs two weeks and a little patience. 🌿

A large, complex weather setup is unfolding across the U.S.: Upper Midwest / Great Lakes: Heavy winter weather—ice storm and winter storm warnings—impacting areas around Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Northern Plains / Rockies: Widespread winter storm warnings and advisories, with snow, ice, and strong winds. Central Plains (Kansas–Colorado region): Critical fire danger with red flag warnings due to dry, windy conditions. Southern Plains (Texas/Oklahoma): Flood watch in parts of Oklahoma, signaling potential heavy rain. West Coast & Northeast: Scattered marine and wind advisories along coastal areas. Overall: a split pattern—winter storms up north, fire risk in the central U.S., and localized flooding threats farther south.
