It’s #ThermalThursday so this #thermalgeek is sharing my favorite thermal spring from the six-plus decades I’ve been visiting and exploring Yellowstone. Unnamed hot spring GSSGNN025.
When I saw it for the first time I literally cried at its sheer beauty.
Mudpot Monday.
A mudpot from the Yellowstone backcountry.

Thermophiles lending their unique coloration to the outflow channel from a Yellowstone host spring.

Mudpot cauldron at Fountain Paintpots at Yellowstone National Park.
Every time a splatter lands outside the cauldron, moisture is lost. Mudpots become more dried out as the summer progresses.

Thermal Thursday at Artists Paintpots, #Yellowstone. An unnamed thermal stream alive with thermophilic communities (filamentous thermophiles, swaying in the flow; mats shaping around debris, etc). Stream is partly the outflow of Blood Geyser, whose vent is reddened by iron oxides.

#MudpotMonday.
One of the most foul mudpots I’ve seen in #Yellowstone’s backcountry.
Deep gray = iron sulfide minerals like kaolinite & fine-grained pyrite. This mudpot also contains petroleum distillate. In case you’re wondering, this paintpot smelled as foul as it looks!

This #thermalgeek observes Mudpot Monday. So here’s a pic of #Yellowstone ’s fascinating Coffin Lid Spring.

For this #thermalgeek Thermal Thursday rocks. Here are some pics of the “Formation Group” of thermal features in the Gibbon Basin, #Yellowstone National Park. A large mudpot caldron formed within this group very recently. So cool!
…it’s just another mudpot Monday…whoa-oh…🎶
Mudpots are amazing. They’re fun to watch, fun to listen to and fun to smell (hmm, well, okay maybe smelling hydrogen sulfide gas isn’t everyone’s idea of fun).
But really, #Yellowstone ’s mudpots are amazing!

Finished the one on the left - really enjoyed it. And now, on to the one on the right. McPhee is a favorite author of mine.

Just your friendly neighborhood #thermalgeek stopping by to say hi!
[that’s Column Geyser behind me, impressing me with its noisy surges]
Thermal Thursday. I was pretty jazzed to catch a solid eruption of Pyramid Geyser. This sweet little geyser has an irregular interval (and therefore isn’t predictable). Its eruption was lovely. Pyramid Geyser is at the base of White Pyramid Cone, #Yellowstone

Today for Thermal Thursday I’m featuring the lovely (and quite hot) “Surprise Pool” on Firehole Lake Drive in #Yellowstone. Surprise has some lovely delicate sinter formations along its edges, plus an overhang worth a second look.

Fountain Paintpot, #Yellowstone. On this particular day the escaping gasses were creating the most gloriously loud and entertaining splatters. Such a delight!

Thermal Thursday. A couple of photos from the Imperial group of thermal features, #Yellowstone. Such a lovely little thermal area. You’ve got to hike to see this one (another mile beyond Fairy Falls).

Thermal Thursday. Here’s a photo of the incredibly beautiful thermal area on the south canyon wall of the Grand Canyon of the #Yellowstone River across the river from the in-canyon view point at Red Rocks. Isn’t it amazing?

My favorite thermal feature in my favorite place: #Yellowstone National Park.

Thermal Thursday. Big Cone, along the shore of #Yellowstone Lake at West Thumb Geyser Basin. No major eruptions of Big Cone have been observed in recent history, but imagining a cone-type water eruption from this venerable old feature really brings it to life for me!

The amazing Ebro Springs in #Yellowstone National Park.
Never seen more resplendent thermophilic green than this anywhere in Yellowstone.
