She is best known for her landmark book, The Second Sex. The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy calls it “trailblazing work.” Beauvoir saw that society valued traits that were associated with men while it regarded women as inferior or a sub-class. This led her to re-think her behavior and social standing. Beauvoir abandoned faith and refused to accept that she should be considered less than a man. She rejected marriage and took lovers when she wanted their company. Beauvoir did have something like a lifelong partnership with the writer and philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre. They met at the Sorbonne in Paris and he was the only person who scored higher on a key test at the University. Beauvoir’s conversations, primarily with Sartre, led her to write The Second Sex, which includes her assertion that “One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman.” This is central to her conviction that the individual defines the meaning of her own existence.
English philosopher Kate Kirkpatrick published the 2019 biography Becoming Beauvoir: A Life. In The Guardian that same year, Kirkpatrick wrote “Simone de Beauvoir was an engaged intellectual who combined philosophical and literary productivity with real-world political action that led to lasting legis- lative change. Her life has inspired generations of women seeking indepen- dence, and this was largely attributed to her unconventional relationship with the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, which seemed like a love that did not come at the cost of her freedom or professional success.”

“Self-knowledge is no guarantee of happiness, but it is on the side of happiness and can supply the courage to fight for it.”
