辞書で単語を調べながら、苦戦しつつもなんとか読み切りました。ホームズ読んだ時もそうだったけど、辞書で調べると

で始まるのがすごく嬉しくなってしまう。理由はわからないけど。
悲惨な状況をあらわす言葉って、英語も結構たくさんあるのね。そういう雰囲気を、もっと言えば、火星人に滅ぼされる、または家畜化されるしかない人類の絶望を原文で感じたかったのですが、まだまだ道半ばだなあ。
またあとで読み返してみよう。
