Gambit: Start Here – The Essential Marvel Echoes Primer Origin Spark: The Thief's Hand and the Devil's Debt Long before he was an X-Man, he was just Remy LeBeau, a boy born in New Orleans with unnerving, burning red eyes. Considered a bad omen, he was abandoned at birth and kidnapped from his hospital ward by the LeBeau Clan, the powerful Thieves' Guild. Raised by their patriarch, Jean-Luc LeBeau, Remy was trained from childhood to be a master thief, and his natural charm and superhuman agility made him the guild's prodigy as revealed in a flashback in Gambit (Vol. 3) #1 (1999). He was a thief first, a mutant second. His life was dictated by the guild. To secure peace between the Thieves and their rivals, the Assassins' Guild, a marriage was arranged between Remy and Bella Donna Boudreaux, the granddaughter of the Assassins' leader. But Bella Donna's brother, Julien, objected and challenged Remy to a duel. Remy won, gravely wounding Julien. To prevent an all-out guild war, Remy was excommunicated from his home, a master thief with no guild and no family in X-Men (Vol. 2) #8 (1992). This exile defined his lone wolf status for years. Cast out, Remy wandered the world as a thief for hire. During this time, his mutant power—the ability to charge objects with explosive biokinetic energy—began to grow out of his control. He feared he would burn himself out. Desperate, he sought out the one man he heard could help mutants with their powers: the brilliant, sinister geneticist Mister Sinister as depicted in X-Men (Vol. 2) #33 (1994). Sinister agreed to help, performing a procedure that dampened Remy's powers to a manageable level. But this "cure" came at a cost. Sinister would one day ask for a favor, and Remy would have to pay. That day came, and it became Gambit's original sin. Sinister tasked Remy with assembling a team of mercenaries, the Marauders, and leading them into the Morlock tunnels beneath New York City. Gambit, believing they were only there for reconnaissance, did as he was asked. He was horrifyingly wrong. The Marauders immediately began slaughtering the entire Morlock community in what became known as the Mutant Massacre as seen in Uncanny X-Men #350 (1997). A horrified Gambit tried to stop them but was nearly killed by Sabretooth. He managed to save only one person, a young Morlock girl named Sarah, who would one day grow up to be the X-Man, Marrow. Haunted by the blood on his hands, Remy fled, burying his secret deep. He eventually returned to thievery, which is how he crossed paths with a de-aged, amnesiac Storm, who was on the run from the Shadow King. The two became partners, stealing to survive as seen in Uncanny X-Men #266 (1990). When Storm eventually regained her memories and powers, she vouched for this strange new mutant, bringing Gambit back to the X-Mansion. He officially joined the X-Men in Uncanny X-Men #267 (1990), a charming rogue with a quick wit and a dark past. His early days on the team were defined by his rebellious streak, his rivalry with Wolverine, and, most importantly, his tragic, all-consuming romance with Rogue from X-Men (Vol. 2) #4 (1992). Her inability to touch anyone without absorbing their powers and psyche was the ultimate barrier for the tactile, charismatic thief.
