Popeye's debut comic strip, from January 17, 1929. First Panel Castor Oyl (talking to Harold Hamgravy): "You'll find the scum of the Earth right here in this port - so we've got to be careful in picking our crew." Second Panel Castor (walking along the pier, carrying a briefcase with a hen walking next to him): "Hey there! Are you a sailor?" Third Panel Sailor/Popeye: "Ja think I'm a cowboy?" Castor: "O.K. You're hired." Fourth Panel (Sailor/Popeye rowing Castor and Harold to a bigger boat.) Castor: "I'm glad we gave Olive the slip." Harold: "Yeah - I'll be she's still looking for a dime's worth of longitude." Fifth Panel Sailor/Popeye: "You mean me?" Castor: "Yas - you! You're the whole crew - snap into it - tidy up the ship - batten down the hatches - scrub the decks - pull up the anchor - get three sheets into the wind and then go to the helm!" Harold: "Smells like codfish."
Happy 97th anniversary of Popeye's debut in Thimble Theatre! #Popeye #PopeyetheSailorMan #ThimbleTheatre
Popeye's original design is now public domain & I hope that beyond all the lazy horror parodies we'll finally get stories close to his roots of social and political satire.

Reading The Thimble Theatre pre-Popeye Sunday strips. Castor has just arrived in the great American desert. Let's see what's in store for him. #Popeye #ThimbleTheatre
Only in a Segar strip you get a bump after being shot #ThimbleTheatre
Very early Popeye, in the pivotal Thimble Theatre storyline "The Black Barnacle", in front of a palm tree, peering over a rock, saying "A hut an' a man - that means food for us!"
Presented with no context whatsoever because reasons 😆
Tbf, context doesn't help it any.

Been following the rerun of #ThimbleTheatre "The Black Barnacle" storyline on #ComicsKingdom. It's a landmark story, marking many significant shifts for EC Segar, including 1st appearance of the #SeaHag. & y'know what? - she isn't the villain here.
Castor & #Popeye are
Mainly Castor 😅
Cropped image from original Thimble Theatre by EC Segar. Popeye, Castor Oyl & unnamed cop on the deck of the Black Barnacle ship. Popeye: "Yeah an' I wish the Sea Hag was aboard instead of hun'erds of miles south on 'er Island. I'd like to push her nose too" Castor: "Feeling great, aincha" Cop: "Blow me down by heck" The Sea Hag lurks behind them, watching from a hatch. She's not happy about this.
"She's right behind me, isn't she."

A page from Thimble Theatre's "The Black Barnacle" storyline. The first appearance of the Sea Hag, she is a black silhouette against a dark line-art sky, looming over the sleeping Castor Oyl. Sea Hag: "Come!" Castor Oyl: "Ho hum! Did you say something, Popeye?" SH: "Come!" CO: scared "You mean me?"
When I say the Sea Hag was terrifying in her first- ever appearance, I'm not kidding! Segar actually toned her *down* in later stories.
Here she is in her debut #ThimbleTheatre story "The Black Barnacle"
