A big thank you to the publisher: #TommyNelson / #ThomasNelson for approving my request for this one! I am a fan of #DudePerfect, like watching their Youtube stuff and so I am excited to read this book! *dances*

90 years ago today, #ThomasNelson editor Wilson was languishing in hospital. (Boxing Day - miserable!) His daughter had been handling his correspondence whilst he was ill. But by Boxing Day, he'd been able to check the page proofs of the #MusicGuide from his hospital bed. #Dedication! #OverAndAbove

Friday afternoon find in the #Archives. A memo is sent to three of the Edinburgh managers of #ThomasNelson, in July 1956. They may have to entertain a couple of visitors from Melbourne whilst their colleague is away. 'It might be wise to point out that Mr C is a teetotaller'.
Hope they remembered!

#ArchivesDay and I can't think of a less appealing book title than 'The Unamiable Child'. I don't think #ThomasNelson offered the author a contract!
However, isn't that exactly what #HorridHenry was ... ?

Possibly useless information, but I have to share!
@qmueresearch.bsky.social if anyone at QMU is researching your ancestor, Edinburgh College of of Domestic Science, then I can advise them that there was a bunch of correspondence with publisher #ThomasNelson in 1933 about a book they were producing.

#ArchivesDay. Classic mistake from a rookie author in 1932: they write ASKING THE PUBLISHER #ThomasNelson if they publish a particular genre. Someone evidently didn't do their research! Nelson's reply does not survive.

#ArchivesDay. My curiosity is piqued by a book proposal to #ThomasNelson for a collection of prayers. The editor doesn't think 'that we want any prayers, but will decide finally when [he sees] how Mr D. Had prayed!'
No, this is not actually the gentleman I'm trying to track down ...

Right! Time to sort out all these #ThomasNelson publishing bods and departments!

#ArchivesDay. One of our #ThomasNelson London editors is liaising with the Edinburgh office. Flattering the Scottish printers, he says an author 'has apparently had bitter experiences with other publishers and printers, but they were probably English!' A cunning move to get the printers on side.

#ArchivesDay continues. The unfortunate Miss H writes a letter on behalf of her boss at #ThomasNelson the publishers. She tells the recipient (a colleague) that her boss "seems to be getting agitated" ...
Said boss seems to have been a lovely gent, so I'm sure his agitation was very mild!

Re-reading Flashbacks book, #ThomasNelson & Sons. Much more interesting now I recognise many of the names. (Checking my own spreadsheet!) 'You couldn't walk from here to Surgeons' Hall without meeting probably a dozen people who worked in Nelsons', said a former employee. @iashedinburgh.bsky.social

Still ploughing through the archives, I'm again reminded that in the early 1950s, #ThomasNelson publishers were in the habit of borrowing books from @natlibscot.bsky.social. Yes, I know! A legal deposit, reference library. But there it is - the letters are right in front of me!

Glorious, sunny #ArchivesDay in Edinburgh. I can imagine the #ThomasNelson editors sighing as they rejected this particular manuscript:- 'Wet Day Gardening'. Doesn't sound much fun!

#ArchivesDay - the editors at #ThomasNelson were bemused by a letter. Pencil note on a mysterious letter from New South Wales reads, 'Miss J, Can you make sense of this?'
And the attached reply?
'I am sorry that we cannot be of any help to you in this matter.'
It was a VERY weird letter!

#ArchivesDay - I'm not finding anything relevant. But here's a letter anyone would like to receive!
#ThomasNelson writes to a Swiss professor, 'Your letter [..] came as a shining light on a dark night. It gave me infinite pleasure [..] I am eager to see anything which you may have written.'๐Ÿ˜

#ArchivesDay - haven't found what I'm looking for, but I'm intrigued by the deal struck between an Edinburgh car hire firm and publishers #ThomasNelson in 1954. Copies of a book on Scotland to be sold to this firm, with an 8-page advertising insert!

#ArchivesDay. I FOUND a memo from the lady who briefly worked at #ThomasNelson in Edinburgh. She rescued a book and gave it to the library of the college where she formerly worked. It survives there to this day! @edunilibraries.bsky.social @strath-ioe.bsky.social
Suddenly today's a good day :)

Always courteous, are our #ThomasNelson staff. This is from 1953, to a firm that has outstanding debts:-
'Will you be so kind as assist us and particularly our Counting Room staff by giving your attention to your valued account with us, now considerably overdue. Yours very truly ...'

'So many changes have taken place that there is something reassuring in the knowledge that "Education" continues its useful existence ...'
Written by a #ThomasNelson editor, 72 years ago. Plus ca change ...?

#ArchivesDay. Hoping to find correspondence from a particular Glaswegian #ThomasNelson editor. Will today be my lucky day?

#ArchivesDay. Relieved I am, to learn that #ThomasNelson rejected a reading scheme which the author called, 'Backward English Course'. I can hardly imagine a pupil or parent opening such a title with anything but horror! Even in 1953.

Spooky. Last Sunday, I found myself looking at a hymn tune named after the theological college that one of 'my' #ThomasNelson educationalists attended. I'd never heard the name before last week.
This morning, I've found a letter about a Scots song. I introduced that one to the choir the other night!

#ArchiveDay and I'm gutted to find that in Feb 1953, #ThomasNelson turned down the offer of a book on the history of Clan #Macauley. How COULD they?!

#ArchivesDay. A #ThomasNelson book rejection back in 1953 is a timely reminder to know one's audience:-
'not the scholarship to attract the historian nor the railway interest to attract the enthusiast ... How anybody outside Bedlam can hope to inflict dull, dry-as-dust prose on children ...'

#ArchiveDay. Phew! A couple of hours of intense concentration in the education editorial department of #ThomasNelson witnessing the birth of a new school music publication back in 1936. Now I've seen it through, I think I deserve lunch. I'm sure the author and editor would agree.

I hardly need tell you what the question was.
Reply from the senior family member of #ThomasNelson, in 1930 (I'm outraged on Mr Nelson's behalf!)
'In reply to your friend's question, I may say that there is no chance whatever of my parting with any portion of my share in this [family] business.'
