@colin_mcmillen it’s all sealed up now, but if you search for my posts tagged with #tinyMac you’ll see all the work that led up to this.
Also: it’s not pretty and I’m not proud 😆
Anyway, this feels relevant (playing on Linux, obvs, not Mac OS) #tinyMac
Would I do anything different if I did another #tinyMac build?
- I'd love to make use of the touch switch in the top of the case for something, but I snipped the wires off that early on
- similarly, it would be nice to have made use of the dial on the front to control volume
- adding a data […]
As the #tinyMac currently stands, I reckon I've spent about £90 on it. I've spent more overall, though, as I've bought a few parts and replaced them with alternatives. Notably I've gone through a few iterations of amplifier and speaker combinations to get rid of the CPU/BT/Wifi noise, and […]
Final bill of materials:
- Maclock donor case
- Raspberry Pi 3a+
- Waveshare 2.8” LCD
- 10cm GPIO extension cable
- 15cm SD extension cable
- 2x miniature monitor speakers
- some wires
- Kapton tape
- hot glue
Plus a USB-C PSU (borrowed from my Steam Deck), and a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse […]
A Tiny Macintosh computer on a wooden table, with an Apple Magic Mouse and Keyboard. The Mac is running System 7.5.5
A close-up of the same Tiny Mac. There is an SD card inserted where the floppy drive would be on a real Macintosh.
A rear-view of the Tiny Mac, showing the USB-C power connecting where the original IEC C13 plug would have gone on a full-size Mac
My #tinyMac hardware build is complete! It was surprising just how much of a challenge squeezing all the hardware and cabling into the case was in the end. The underlying Linux OS is Bluetooth paired with a spare, modern, Magic Mouse and Keyboard.
Now to […]

I’m really happy with the components, now I just need to fit it all together neatly! #tinyMac
Yay! I solved the audio problems with the #tinyMac!
Some things arrived in the post from China today:
- an audio noise/ground hum isolator
- a pair of small speakers designed for use in monitors
The audio isolator almost completely eliminates the noise […]

So, my #MARCHintosh goal is to finish the #tinyMac (hopefully with sort of working, internal, audio solution) and get it on #globaltalk
I've finally decided to give up on the Teeny Tiny Amp in the #tinyMac. The PAM8403 might as well be an RF receiver as an amp, not helped by the Pi being very noisy.
I'll keep looking for a better solution that will fit in in the Maclock case, but for now I'll have to make do with a nearby […]
A Macintosh Plus 1MB in The Design Museum, with original keyboard and mouse
The inspiration for my #tinyMac
Love it! 😍
On the subject of #tinyMac shenanigans, and general #mac #retrocomputing goodness, this looks like an interesting thing to run on your Teeny Tiny Macintosh.
I'll be honest: getting this thing to play #badApple in one form or another was definitely on my todo list 😎

I finally glued the display into my #tinyMac today, talk about nerve wracking!
Anyways, a tiny dab of superglue at each corner of the "glass", to hold it in place, followed by a thin sausage of sugru around the edges of the display aperture. Then very gently pressing the LCD into place, lining […]

Somebody else had done a really nice #tinyMac build, and documented it well on YouTube.
Their 3D printed screen bracket is a great touch.
I added USB-PD trigger to the #tinyMac today. It means I can power it with a decent USB-PD capable PSU and get plenty of juice (3A at 5V) for the Pi, display and Teeny Tiny Amplifier. No more undervoltage alerts from it at all, even when under load and banging out some tunes from the Teeny Tiny […]
And here’s the #tinyMac guts again, with the screen attached and playing Lemmings in Mini vMac, just to prove the display still works after I poked the GPIO pins with my soldering iron.
To distract me from buying stuff on eBay I don’t need, I’m trying to actually finish the project I’m working on *now* 😆
So, I’ve added the Teeny Tiny Amp and Teeny Tiny Speakers to the #tinyMac
Sound is tinny, obviously, from those Teeny Tiny Drivers, but […]

I have received more parts for the #tinyMac in the post today. A teeny tiny audio amp, and two teeny tiny speakers.
Also ordered one of those USB-C PD trigger boards to fit into the USB-C shaped hole on the back and provide a decent amount of power, as […]

Spent the evening hacking away (with tips from @paulrickards) at getting the MacintoshPi disk image to work with the Waveshare 2.8” DPI display on my #tinyMac, with some success. The scripts to boot into different versions of Mac OS blow away config file changes, so I may fork it to work with […]
If I can get a suitable cable it will save me cutting a new hole in the case, which won’t be as neat as the one that’s already there.
I know I could solder one up out of donor cables, but USB cables are fiddly and I’m lazy 🤷♂️
#tinymac
Help me out fedi: I’m trying to find a cable for my #tinymac build that I’m not even sure exists.
The donor Maclock case takes a USB-C power supply and has a neat hole for it already on the back of the case. The Pi Zero takes power over micro USB though.
I want a cable, less than 20cm long […]
Also, to be clear, open and honest, and avoid any future upset: this #tinyMac *will* be running an #amiga emulator at some point in the future. Don’t say you weren’t warned! 😎
Interestingly, there's an SDL version of Basilisk2 that allows you to run without the overhead of X windows. I'll have a play with that at some point, as it should let me squeeze a bit more performance out of the Pi Zero 2W the #tinyMac is running on. Though I'd lose VNC access 🤷♂️
I've been looking at some alternate emulation options for the #tinyMac. Mini vMac is great for emulating early 68k machines and running up to System 7.5.5, and it emulates the underlying hardware accurately.
For higher spec CPU, RAM, GFX, etc. you need to look to Basilisk2 (up to 68040 and […]
Some work on the TinyMac this afternoon…
The IPA did the trick to loosen the hot glue holding the 18650 cell in (although I damaged the inside of the case a little levering it out 🤷♂️).
And, after some gentle trimming of the guides around the display on […]

One last, quick, video of it running Lemmings, now with sound! #retroGaming #retroComputing #mac
The design and build of the Maclock is really amazing, it’s a fantastic bit of kit for the piece, and is perfect for hacking a TinyMac into like this….except…the assholes seem to have hot glued this 18650 into the bottom of the case 🤨
I’ve put increasing […]

Who doesn’t like tiny Flying Toasters, right? 😎 #retroComputing #mac
I got the new, shorter, GPIO cable for the TinyMac in the post today, and it works perfectly!
I don’t know if the 20cm one was too long for the WaveShare display (the manufacturer’s docs say no more than 10cm!), or just faulty, but the 15cm one does the trick.
I also paired it with a Bluetooth […]
For reference, I've been following this guide:

But intend to mount the guts inside one of these rather than 3D printing one:
