“How was it? You were pretty quiet all day on text." "Weird not to have me nagging you every hour?" Cal teased, and his dad grinned. "A little bit." "Don't worry, I'm sure you'll hear from me more as I settle in." He let out a big sigh as they crossed the parking lot, his breath clouding in front of him. "I don't know. I don't think I've quite processed it yet. But the boss is kind of a jerk." "Grumpy old fella?" They crossed to their respective sides, and Cal opened the shiny red door. He must have gotten it washed again. Any time his dad ran errands without a bed full of cabinetry or lumber, they were guaranteed to go through the car wash. Cal shook his head, both at the way his dad babied his truck and in response to the question. "Grumpy young fella. He's probably only a few years older than me. But he doesn't seem to like his job much. Or maybe he just didn't like me." His dad's head turned sharply toward him as they pulled out onto the highway. "Misgendering?" "No, no. Nothing like that. Just didn't even give me a tour. Showed me my desk and expected me to fill in the blanks, I guess." Cal swallowed and looked out the window. "I'm making it sound worse than it was. How was your day?
