View of hilly grassland, some of which has been mown as it's a golf course. On the centre right is a wood, of which this section is mostly beech trees. A chalk path can be seen on the left, winding up the hill. To it's right is a round tumuli emerging from the rough grass. Another tumuli can just be seen on the top of the hill, up and to the right of the first. These are both early bronze age. At the bottom left of image is a wire-haired dachshund, snuffling about in the grass.

Walking on gorgeous Therfield Heath today, so here are some #tombsonTuesday. The Heath is an ancient chalk landscape and home to tumuli and barrows spanning several thousand years. Most of it is still common land. More info in alt text. Bonus points for spotting smol dog

A very large tomb marker stood against part of the church wall. The marker is carved with the image of a married couple, standing under a canopy of gothic arches. The woman has a head covering with a chin strap, and long robes, while her husband wears a short head covering and a shorter set of robes. The couple both have their hands together in prayer and both of them have smiley dogs at their feet who, like the couple, face each other.

Absolutely stunning alabaster effigy of Leonora Bennet, sculpted by John and Matthias Christmas. She is reclining on her side, facing outward into the church, propped up on one arm. Her 17th century dress and jewels are beautifully rendered, especially her lace collar, the cuffs of her sleeves, and her pearl necklaces - the larger jewels drop toward the direction she is leaning (better detail can be seen in the next image). Below her effigy, on the main part of the tomb, is another beautiful carving of a Charnel House: human bones trapped behind a barred window. The text of her memorial is above her head and transcribed in the next Alt text. The Christmas family were master ship carvers for the Royal Navy, pageant artificers for the Mayor of London, London theatres, and the English nobility, and sculptors both in stone, and possibly uniquely for the period, cast metal.

Stone memorial mounted on the wall in the church. In the centre is carved a scythe and some ears of wheat. The surrounding text reads: St Walstan the patron saint of faming and farmworkers buried here in 1016. A man of piety humility and kindness. Celebrated by the community in 2016. Supposedly born in 975, there are only 2 sources for his life, De Sancto Walstano Confessore in the Nova Legenda Angliæ, and 'The History of St. Walston now part of Lambeth MSS 935. The original parchment was owned by a man named Clarke, a Norfolk recusant, who claimed it once came from Bawburgh.
