The film was directed by Clint Eastwood, who is a big fan of jazz. The picture was taken at the Charlie Parker Festival, an annual event in late August in honor of the man known as "Bird" and "Yardbird" (a slang term for chicken: Parker was very fond of fried chicken). McPherson also played the Charlier Parker parts for the movie's soundtrack.
