Wonderful Tanfield Monument in Burford Church, Oxford, which was apparently erected surreptitiously overnight in the chapel by Lady Tanfield after her husband’s death in 1625. Its most notable feature is that it is a cadaver monument #burford #churchmonument #transitomb

That’s a proper cadaver effigy (rolled mat, shroud knotted at head &relatively early stage of decomposition). It’s George Sydenham Archdeacon & royal chaplain (d.1524) in Salisbury Cathedral. I have a bit of a special interest in 16thC cadaver tombs & this one is wonderful #cadavertomb #transitomb
