A large Ostrya virginiana tree with flared roots and a quickly flaring crown.
The world’s largest Ostrya virginiana (hop-hornbeam/ironwood) 112 inches in circumference and 70 ft tall. It may not seem huge, but Ostrya are normally sub-canopy trees. Found in Hewen’s Creek Park in southern Ypsilanti Township.

A photo I took May 27, 2025. A peek up the trees beside my house this sunny morning. The photo shows a large birch tree, white bark with green leaves near the very top of the branches reaching the blue sky. Smaller trees surround the birch, lots of green popping up as the earth warms, snow melts. I’m happily warm as well.
When it snows 5 months of the year, the newly lush green of the forest is quite exciting. 🤓

A very old olive tree growing together with big, nearly white pile of rocks worked by men. The tree has still green leaves although the trunk seems died off. In the background you can see a round building made of the same stones looking like a small hill. It is sunny.
An ancient olive tree is nearly grown together with the ruins of a village which was built est. 2000 years BC on the Balearic Island Menorca.
I found places like this all over the island, holy places and large tombs. Just calm and awe-inspiring, magical. #RockinTuesday #StressBreak #Trunktuesday

A Horse Chestnut tree trunk is featured in the middle of the picture. It has 9 main branches in its crown, supported by an asymmetrical trunk that has a curious flat side on the right that is overhung by two of the giant branches. The flat side is likely caused by an old substantial girding root. The bark is grey and has the flaky checked pattern typical of the genus. The trunk and branches have many burls whose bumps resemble eyes and mouths and noses if examined with a whimsical eye. The background of the photo is a street and sidewalk on the left, a lawn in the middle surrounding the tree, and an apartment building and parked vehicles on the right. A curious thing I learned observing this particular tree is that the flowers (white with red speckles) change colour as they age. I learned later that it is not as a result of aging but that the pollinated ones change colour so that pollinators are less attracted to them, and don't waste their time on them but move on instead to the ones needing pollination - a frugal trick on the part of the tree to maximise its prickly conker production! Funny what can be discovered while waiting idly for the bus.
This Horse Chestnut tree beside the bus stop always makes me smile. Not only does it have an eccentric structure, but all the burls have hidden faces so it feels like a muppet tree-chorus might start at any moment if you turn away to check for the bus!
