In the early 1970s, Gay Liberation Front activists staged provocative 'kiss-ins' in public spaces across London, challenging social taboos. These demonstrations of same-sex affection in places like Trafalgar Square and London Underground stations were both political protests and joyful celebrations. The photographs capture moments of defiant intimacy amid hostile or startled onlookers. documenting a time when public displays of LBGTQ+ affection could result in arrest or violence. These actions formed part of the Gay Liberation Front's broader strategy of confronting homophobia through direct action, combining radical politics with personal liberation and the power of collective resistance.

Wall text from Resistance: Steve McQueen From the suffragettes marching through London's streets to the mass protest against the Iraq War, photographers chronicled how ordinary people fought for progress between 1903 and 2003. Through powerful images by celebrated and unknown photographers, we encounter pivotal moments that defined modern Britain, including the Blind March of 1920, fighting fascism at the Battle of Cable Street in 1936, Greenham Commons Peace Camp (1981-2000), and the Black People's Day of Action following the New Cross house fire in 1981. At the same time, we trace how advances in camera technology allowed photographers to capture moments with a newfound freedom, immediacy, and subjectivity, transforming how they were communicated to the wider public. These photographs taken before smartphones and the mass uptake of social media, reveal how movements for workers rights, racial equality, environmental protection, and LGBTO+ liberation, among countless others, intersected and evolved.

Also enjoyed poking around for Early Meadow-grass, and a Fulmar flew past while we were eating our sandwiches out in the sunshine.
Margate is always worth a visit.
