Just stumbled on this tonight looking around for information on UUCP. So, my loony idea at the moment, is to see if I can funnel UUCP over AX.25 packet radio, with the idea that I can send email over that.
My principle gripe right now is that most UUCP implementations (I've dealt with SCO UUCP […]
A screenshot from a video showing a desk recording setup with microphone, laptop, and a leather-bound notebook with fountain pen. overlaid is a text-mode screen capture of the FreeBSD Installer with a text-based menu reading: |Desktop| Select users to add to the "video" group for 3D acceleration. markp Mark Root Charlie & uucp UUCP pseudo-user There is an X next to markp. Beneath is a shell reading "root@:/ # reboot"
Wow hey apparently #FreeBSD has 3D-accelerated #UUCP via their fancy new desktop-oriented installer?
Some ancient history
I first began using internet email in 1986 or 1987. I was listed in UUCP maps as a system administrator by June 1987 and by January 1988 the UUCP maps were distributed by USENET.
Here is a USENET post for all of the UUCP connected machines in Oklahoma […]
...
So the UUCP maps might be the only way to at least roughly date it.

finally managed to get #nntp connections running on my little #usenet server. The snag turned out to be a setting I had turned off specifically because I wanted to have a a #uucp-only machine.
Oh well, now some groups (#ttrpg ones that is) update instantly because the single nntp connection I […]
In the end I took the plunge and decided that maybe having #nntp connections is not all that bad for our #uucp network.
Mostly because despite the beautiful simplicity of the protocol, actually getting uucp to work on modern machines is a whole different matter. It really is made for a dial-up […]
A page screenshot from O'Reilly Media's "Learning the Korn Shell" by Bill Rosenblatt. The page shows a command example of how you would've acquired a copy of the Korn Shell over UUCP via the old internet service provider UUNET (long since defunct, ergo the command is useless today, since UUNET no longer exists and this book was published in 1993). Around the command, I have edited a red oval to highlight and draw more attention to it (the YouTuber method) in GIMP.
Calling all oldheads who worked with UUCP. I was flipping through an old O'Reilly book of mine and found this. Being younger, I never used UUCP, so forgive me if I understand poorly, but basically UUNET, as an ISP, had publicly accessible UUCP servers that […]

#UUCP was probably the first #socialmedia in the world. But with real friends since you would have to know the correct route to him/her. 😆

Today I spent my day fiddling with my #uucp configuration, and the chat script still is driving me mad. Uucp sends carriage returns it shouldn't and randomly decides documented escape characters are something completely unknown.

another aside: here's a map of the whole #Usenet ca. 1981, linking in aso Berknet (at Berkley University) and ARPAnet.
dashes and exclamation points are #uucp links
I mentioned in my new introduction that I am interested in #uucp, and I thought I should get into this a bit more.
uucp is technically only a unix tool, or maybe toolset, that came around very early in computing (first proper release in '79), to help with early network connections.
The […]
My old #introduction got lost somewhere
German, he/him, 40s, living in Poland (#lodz). I work in IT and do some geeky computer stuff on the side (#usenet, #uucp, #irc)
My main hobby are #ttrpgs (#osr #dnd, #traveller, #shadowrun) and similar (#minipainting, #boardgames) but I also do writing […]
what I want to find is someone else to connect my #uucp system to. unfortunately everybody that was interested in the technology seems to have given up.
spent entirely too much time reading documentation for #uucp to figure out if you can send requests to list files in another system's public folder
result: beats me
Working on my #uucp connections between laptop and rpi. For some reason my Linux notebook just doesn't reach the rpi via uucp, and it doesn't make any sense at all.
eternal-september.org seems down for me for a few days already, and I can't connect to their #nntp server anymore. I still am getting #uucp packages from there though.
that reminds me a bit of aioe.org's demise a few years ago.
#usenet
playing around with #nncp right now (#uucp's fresh-faced little sibling).
finally managed to get it set up to hopefully do what it is supposed to do. @jgoerzen's guides on his website helped, but the app's documentation is again spread over multiple man pages that barely seem to be connected […]
decided to add the whole big 8 and a few different language hierarchies to my little #uucp #usenet server.
having the whole all focused on #ttrpgs and other games was nice, but as I was the only one actually using it it also was quite limiting.
and the big 8 should at least provide some […]
I bet it's some utterly trivial formatting issue. It seems it's waiting for the right login data, but I provide that. I know it's correct because I set it and can see the data right now. And yet it doesn't work.
Not that #uucp doesn't already have it's problems: somehow the setup is so arcane […]
While I managed to get #uucp working with four different remote machines and now am happily exchanging emails and news with all of them, one system still eludes me: my humble Linux notebook.
And I am not quite sure why that is. By all accounts I should have no issue making a uucp connection to […]
