Donella: “Are those two even feeding you? Honestly they can barely remember to feed themselves I’m surprised they’ve been able to keep you alive this long. Don’t give me that look Hugo I’m joking” Right: A half body of older Varian and Hugo alone. Hugo is silent and has a solemn expression on his face. Varian is hugging him from behind, head rested on his shoulder. He lifts Hugo’s hand to his lips and presses a kiss to it. Varian: “…She’s gonna be okay, Hugh. We’ll find a good home for her.” Top middle: Emery is eagerly running up to Hugo, holding out her hands to show him something. an arrow points to Emery reading “found Something (TM)” (Artist didn’t care to specify but its likely some grotesque artifact of nature). Hugo is at the kitchen sink washing a plate, completely unfazed by whatever Emery has found, while Varian stands behind him, horrified by the mystery object. He gags and clasps a hand over his mouth to keep himself from vomiting. Hugo: “Oh, that’s nice, Em ❤️”

Eugene: Our only option is the orphanage, and resources are tight there since the recent storm. We've been helping out as much as we can, but I'd worry about giving them another kid to deal with on top of everything... Hugo: Actually, weve been talking about it, and... Maybe we could take her? You know, at least until Lance gets back. Eugene: Wh- are you sure? It shouldn't be too long before we can find a more permanent living situation, but it could still be a good few months... Varian: It's okay! I mean, a few months isn't so bad. I wouldn't say were cut out for long term parenting...but the twins like us, so we should be okay, right? Panel 2: DAY 1 (ref. Varian and Hugo fostering Emery.) Both are entering the room looking sweaty and exhausted. Hugo: See? Just - whew- it's just like I told you, Goggles. No sweat. Varian: Yeah, it's... quite the opposite, I'm afraid. ..It's okay though! Rapunzel says we need the exercise, I guess... Varian: Though, I do wonder if we'll even be able to find anyone else who can keep up with her... Panel 3: WEEK 2 Hugo is lying on his stomach on the bed reading a book. Olivia is also peeking at it. Across from him, the door to the bathroom is open, and Varian is shaving with Ruddiger perched on his shoulder, curiously padding at the razor handle. Varian: Jeez. Incredible just how much energy can fit into such a tiny body...She's a good kid, though. Reminds me of myself at her age. ‘M gonna miss her, when she's gone. Hugo: ...Yeah, me too. Hugo: The "Dad look" is hot on you, though. Could definitely get used to that. Varian: Oh, shush.
Panel 4: MONTH 2, WEEK 3 Hugo is leaned up against the wall looking annoyed while Varian nods vehemently. They’re “arguing” with Eugene, who is off camera and incredibly frustrated. Eugene. You know, we were trying to involve you two in the adoption process to give you some CLOSURE… Eugene: You weren't supposed to reject literally EVERY APPLICATION. Hugo: Get some better applicants then??? They all sucked Eugene: What was wrong with that older couple?! Hugo: It's a gut feeling, Fitzherbert. I obviously wouldn't expect you to get it. Eugene: Guys, It took Us SIX WEEKS to get all of those! Hugo: Okay??? We've got time. You better get back to work Panel 5: MONTH 3, WEEK 2, DAY 5 Varian and Hugo both have incredibly uncomfortable demeanors and are trying to deny their obvious wishes to adopt Emery. Ruddiger knows what they are. Varian: ..Y’know I was wondering- Hugo: It really is a shame we can't keep the little bugger around, huh? Varian: ,,,OH! Yeah um. YEAH Varian: definitely aHAHAHA- Hugo: CUZ UM. You know it'd be great if we could and all, but we really just aren't prepared for that- Varian: Oh no totally not it'd be insane for us to try and take that on out of nowhere- I mean we're not even moved out of the castle yet can you IMAGINE - Hugo: -- НАНАНАН YEAH THERE'S NO WAY Hugo: Like there's gotta be another family here in Corona with waaaay less baggage who can take waaaay better care of her Varian: Yeah. Yeah yeah yeah for sure. Totally. For sure. Yeah-
Panel 6: MONTH 4, DAY 2 Varian and Hugo are both lying in bed at least a foot apart from each other, and Hugo is turned over on his right side. They’re both looking around uncomfortably and refusing to meet each other’s eyes. (AWKWARD SILENCE) Panel 7: Same as the previous panel, But Varian nervously looks over at Hugo, who turns over to face him. Varian: ...Hugo? Hugo: Yea? Varian: …You want to take her, don't you? Hugo: ...Do you? Varian: ... Yeahkinda. Hugo: …Oh thank the fucking gods Hugo: I didn't want to say anything I was so afraid it was just me Varian: Kiss me Hugo: Please.
