Photograph of a hilltop. In the distance, you can see the cloud over the sea, somewhat lower. In the foreground, some of the shrubbery is broom, in flower with bright yellow flowers. The broom was spectacular.

Here you can see the mountaintop at Paul da Serra (or thereabouts) and the view down to the sea. We are above the cloud.

The broom flowering was spectacular, I have to say.

Emerging out of the tunnel towards Calheta, at the end of our walk. The photograph shows a high arched tunnel clothed in greenery from the mix of damp and warm air. The tunnel itself is much narrower than this and lower and you need to use a torch / phone torch. About 800m in the pitch black!

Along the levada under the branches of the shrubbery. The photo shows a green-edged trough on the right hand side, the levada, a walk way up the centre, a post and cable barrier along the left hand side and over the top, the branches of the shrubbery. Some of this may even be giant heather. The challenge with this levada is the need to keep your eye on a narrow and unevenly paved path while looking up to avoid walking smack into a branch.

The 25 fontes. A photograph of a cliff face with a waterfall running down it. Accessing the final most remote part of this walk -- the fontes -- required descending some distance into a valley by steps, up the other side and then returning over the hill by more steps up and down before retracing one's course into and out of the valley. Unsuitable for those with poor knees or a heart/lung condition. Beware. Other levada are more suitable. The view is no more spectacular than other walks.

The Rabaçal valley, I presume, at the start of our walk. Definitely picturesque. You can't see in this photo but we were above the clouds today.

A levada walk today --10km-- along the Rabaçal - Risco - 25 Fontes levada returning to Calheta. Photos in reverse order.

This is one of the most popular, perhaps overhyped walks. It was a good day out but it can be very busy. I'd say choose a less busy route: they're all as good.

Photograph of a levada, a water-carrying channel, like a miniature canal. The levadas carry water from the rain-soaked areas of the island to where there is less rainfall. Like walking beside a canal, the slope is almost imperceptible. Indeed, occasionally it seems you're walking uphill yet the water is still flowing the same way! The photograph shows a wide muddy path next to a narrow water channel. Above, the pathway is surrounded by trees on the left and the climbing mountainside on the right. The weather is damp and everything that is green is *very* green.

Today's view: a walk through misty mountains along one of the Levadas: the water irrigation channels. We travelled from Ribeiro Frio to Portela, about 7 miles, descending into damp cloud. Bring your wet weather gear!

Photograph of a street scene, looking skywards, a collection of angles, the view during my late afternoon lunch yesterday. Two awnings encroach from the top. A bus shelter is in the foreground, with a yellow bus in the station. Behind curved and coloured flats overlook the street from the other side: the perfect place for your flat in the sun, except for the indescribable noise. I can't believe I've swapped the distant roar of Leicestershire's M1 for sitting roadside in the sun. We often make believe that the M1 is the sea.

The air was thick with noise.
The bar blared out covers of popular songs; someone I've never heard of is my one-and-onlee.
The bus rattled as passengers embarked.
The home-time traffic buzzed past.
The sounds of finishing off the restaurant next door ensured a continuity of sound.
