Founded by John Ross, Worm and Samuel Cornish, it was the first black owned and operated newspaper in America, created by us for us at a time when mainstream papers painted us as criminals or ignored us completely. Freedom's Journal told our stories, exposed injustice, and celebrated black brilliance. It's motto, We wish to plead our own cause and plead. They did loudly, boldly, unapologetically.
