Subject: The Continued Absence of a Single Canadian Victoria Cross Recipient
Your Excellency,
I write to you not only as a citizen but as someone deeply concerned about the erasure of valour, sacrifice, and the ongoing disrespect shown to Canada's modern military veterans.
Canada introduced its own distinct Canadian Victoria Cross in 1993—yet to this day, not a single member of the Canadian Armed Forces has received it. The Department of National Defence's Directorate of Honours and Recognition has publicly stated that
"the concept of war has changed" and that Canada now has a "more elaborate honours system."
My question is: what exactly is this more elaborate system? And how does it justify bypassing the highest honour of bravery, especially when Commonwealth allies such as the UK, Australia, and New Zealand have continued awarding their versions of the Victoria Cross to modern soldiers for actions in the very same conflicts?
Canada's refusal to recognize modern acts of heroism— particularly in Afghanistan-with the Canadian Victoria Cross is not just baffling; it is disgraceful.
Let me bring forward just one example: Jess Larochelle. A soldier who performed an act of unimaginable bravery, sustaining injuries that he never recovered from, only to pass away without the full recognition he so clearly deserved. His story is one of many.
There are hundreds of others, some dead, others permanently disabled physically, mentally, or both-who put their lives on the line in a war that Canada never should have entered in the first place.
The legacy of World War I and II veterans is rightly honoured, their sacrifices commemorated, their medals awarded. But our contemporary veterans are too often forgotten, left to battle PTSD, chronic pain, homelessness, and neglect. To not award a single Canadian Victoria Cross for actions in Afghanistan or other modern missions is a national failure one that demands correction.
I understand, Your Excellency, that this inaction is not solely …

My email to our governor General of Canada, in regards to this extremely disrespectful action by our government towards our extremely brave and selfless soldiers.
