The White Lion is an early 17th Century Grade-II listed public house straddling Crown Street and Duke Street in the centre of Wellington, Shropshire. On the Duke Street side, you'll find a mural (one of 12 dotted around the town centre) depicting Frances Houlston and Patrick Brontë, father of the famous literary dynasty and the first member of the family in print. Under the stewardship of Frances' son, Edward, Houlston's established itself as one of the leading provincial print houses in early 19th Century England, publishing two books of poetry by Brontë - who was a curate in the town during 1809. While his stay was short, it was in Wellington that Brontë secured the connectiond that took him to Yorkshire and led directly to his meeting his future wife, Maria Branwell. File under: short but significant!
