It’s #WIPWednesday so here’s a little quote from my current gothic fantasy book which I am currently tweaking and rewriting, with the hope of finishing it by the end of the year. LET’S DO THIS.

Screenshot of a few paragraphs from "At the Road's End"
The text reads:
“Terrorist and murderer, was it?” Adrian’s words held a mirth that hadn’t been there before. Like when they were both young and served together at Kroma.
Toini huffed, and a moment later, Adrian laughed.
“You’re sure you don’t want to get married?”
“Oh, shut it.”
“I can see the headlines already. Royal prince dumps administratix for bloodthirsty childhood lover.”
A smile tugged at her lips and she forced herself to remain neutral and serious. “We were not children, and I was not your lover.”
“Pfft…” Adrian snorted. “As if anyone cares about facts.”

Random #WIPQuote, because I feel like it. This is from the middle of At the Road's End - shortly before things start going even more wrong than they already were.

Eddy couldn't take his eyes off the new Clesith flag adorning their station. It had the same circle with an angled triangle at the top, and the stripes of blue and green as usual, but the singular red stripe had been changed to orange to signify Amatta's party's control. Like many things, it was a small change, but enough small changes led to a new world indistinguishable
from the one before.

So, I did a little bit of writing but I ended up doing more lore/world building. Sometimes it’s words, sometimes it’s learning how to correctly use a displacement map in photoshop for your planet-state’s hanging flag.

Unseen flowers opened, and scents like memories wafted through the darkness.
Places she’d been, lands she’d walked. Every flower a moment of her past and a message to the here and now. A language that could only be understood, but never known.
All around her, the world answered.

Expectations shape the world.

They might have heard of Toulikki of the Leaf and Pond, and they might have seen her picture, but no sane person would expect the new bartender at their local to be an internationally wanted terrorist, and expectations shaped the world.

A wall of text from At The Road's End. It reads as follows:
Toini had lungs now, not a sky and wind and clouds, but real, human lungs, and she knew how to breathe. She could probably move, but wasn't sure she was ready to try. It was enough just to have a body again. All to herself, and a mind all her own. Flesh and bone and messy fluids. Complex thoughts and stupid questions. Lungs, to breathe.
For the longest time, she just lay there and felt her mind reconnect with her body. Silent. From time to time, she smiled, but that was it. It was enough just to exist.

Happy Friday everyone. Sitting on the bus and looking over what I wrote last night, and happy enough to share it as it is.
This is Toini waking up at the beginning of the last scene of the last chapter of At the Road's End.

"Even if it's perfect, even if they're your best friend, the person you want to spend every waking moment with it can't last. One of you will eventually die. You have to accept that or how do you ever ever continue when it happens?"

No, of course I'm completely unbiased and my personal beliefs never show through in my books. Why would you ask?

#WIPQuote :

“Some people would say there’s always a choice.” Neta slowly shook her head and sneered. “Those people are fools playing with semantics.”

I made a punny. :D
(yeah, that's how funny I am)

A bit past five, but not late enough to raise anyone’s eyebrows. Air bus scheduling was hardly an exact science. Wouldn’t stand up to a stiff breeze, as the old joke went.

...and this one line pretty much sums up what At the Road's End is about:

She’d thought she knew what she was doing, and now she didn’t.

“Your sister is dead.” Her words came out nearly a growl, and Toini placed her hands on the table, palms down, to keep them from shaking. “Body and soul, I’m still her, but the woman you knew never made it out of the jungle.”

A screenshot of a scene from At the Road's End.
The text reads as follows:
Toini woke up, and she wished she hadn’t.
That vague awareness of how moments ago she’d not known how her head hurt or her body ached. Wishing she were back there, oblivious and asleep. An impenetrable wall, thin as an instant. The knowledge that the day was upon her, and she’d spend it as a soggy cardboard copy of her real self.
Her mouth tasted like ass.
She tried to open her eyes, but that just made it worse, and a pained groan escaped her. Too bright.
Something hard poked into the small of her back, and when she tugged at her blanket, her feet came bare. Uncomfortable. Her bed smelled of old sweat, beer, and leftover pizza, or maybe that was she. If she made any sudden movements, she’d throw up.

Another one of my guilty pleasures as an author is hangover scenes.
There's something oddly appealing about trying to catch the feeling of that moment when you go from blissful oblivion to complete physical and mental misery.

If she thought things through before she opened her mouth, she'd never get anything said.

“To our fallen friends, comrades, and family, may your atoms rejoin the stars as your memory remains with us,” Fanelli held the open glass up in the air as it clinked against its brethren held up by everyone else in the small room.

"Swamp. Devils and a swamp. Awesome." Sheila wondered how much better this was going to get.
"It's not far," Manco said. "As soon as you can smell it, we're almost there."
Yes, the Shaman thought, this *was* getting better by the minute.

"Because, maybe, if she could just make this moment last forever, everything would be fine."

Putting a little of myself in the story. Been feeling this a lot lately, in between all the mess and stress.
