Only one president in the last 50 years left office with a budget surplus: Bill Clinton. He inherited a $255 billion deficit from George H.W. Bush and walked out the door in 2001 with a $128 billion surplus -the only surplus years between 1970 and 2023. It didn't last. George W. Bush inherited a projected $5.6 trillion ten-year surplus and promptly torched it with two wars, a Medicare drug benefit, and tax cuts -turning it into $2 trillion in actual deficits by 2008. The irony writes itself: the GOP has owned the "fiscally responsible" brand for decades. But the last four presidents to add the most to the national debt -as a percentage of GDP -were Reagan, Bush 41, Bush 43, and Trump. All Republicans. The rhetoric and the record don't match. They never have. SO WHERE ARE WE NOW? The national debt has hit 100% of GDP. The CBO projects a $1.853 trillion deficit for fiscal 2026 -Trump's first full year. That deficit-to-GDP ratio is expected to average 6.1% over the next decade, nearly double Treasury Secretary Bessent's stated goal of 3%. The "One Big Beautiful Bill" will drain another $5.2 trillion in federal revenue over ten years. The tariffs -sold as a fix -are, according to economists, a weak revenue tool that won't come close to plugging the hole. What they will do is cost the average American household $1,500 more in 2026. That's not a tariff on China. That's a tax on US.

Call it the “Iran Terror Premium.” Roughly a quarter of the world’s seaborne oil trade transits the Persian Gulf, much of it through the narrow Strait of Hormuz. When markets price crude oil, they must account for the risk that conflict, sabotage and terrorism will interrupt these flows.
