Clara Immerwahr: Pioneering German Chemist and Her Struggle Against Gender and Moral Constraints Clara Immerwahr was born in 1870 in Polkendorf, Germany, and became the first woman in Germany to earn a PhD in Chemistry in 1900, overcoming significant institutional barriers. Despite her achievements, societal expectations limited her career, and she married fellow chemist Fritz Haber. Clara supported Haber's work but faced growing frustration as his ambitions included the development of chemical weapons during World War I. Deeply opposed to the use of science for lethal purposes, she confronted the moral implications of her husband’s work. On May 2, 1915, overwhelmed by despair and moral outrage, she died by suicide, leaving a profound mark on her son and the history of women in science. For decades, her contributions were overshadowed by her husband's fame, but feminist scholars in the late 20th century helped revive her legacy, recognizing her courage, intellect, and moral integrity.
