Study Links Receptivity to Corporate Buzzwords with Poorer Decision-Making and Analytical Skills A recent study from Cornell University, led by cognitive psychologist Shane Littrell and published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences, explores how susceptibility to corporate bullshit—vague, impressive-sounding jargon like 'synergistic leadership' or 'growth-hacking paradigms'—affects workplace performance. Littrell developed the Corporate Bullshit Receptivity Scale (CBSR) to measure this trait. Using a custom 'corporate bullshit generator' to create meaningless yet buzzword-heavy sentences, the researcher tested over 1,000 office workers by having them rate these statements' perceived 'business savvy' alongside genuine quotes from Fortune 500 executives. Findings revealed a clear pattern: employees more receptive to such corporate BS tended to view their supervisors as more charismatic and visionary. However, they scored lower on measures of analytic thinking, cognitive reflection, fluid intelligence, and effective workplace decision-making. Paradoxically, these same individuals reported higher job satisfaction and greater inspiration from company mission statements. They were also more prone to spreading corporate jargon themselves. The study highlights a potential downside in corporate culture where vague rhetoric may impress but ultimately hinders practical judgment and performance. While some employees find motivation in this language, those most drawn to it appear less equipped for sound, evidence-based decisions, suggesting companies could benefit from promoting clearer communication and critical thinking to improve outcomes.
