The world marked #WorldHumanitarianDay this week.
2025 is on course to become the deadliest year for aid workers on record. Across the wider Caritas network, we're deeply concerned by the continual erosion of humanitarian law, something that Pope Leo XIV has also denounced.

RWI participated in the Humanitarian Coordination Forum at UNECA in Addis Ababa on 19 August to mark #WorldHumanitarianDay. The event, themed “Act for Humanity – Calling for Protection, Accountability and Action”, emphasized the need for stronger solidarity and concrete measures to uphold IHL.
Armed conflict causes immense suffering to children.
Many spaces they rely on for education or play are no longer safe.
Children caught in war MUST be protected.

On World Humanitarian Day, the U.N. reports 383 aid workers killed in 2024 — a 31% rise.
181 were killed by Israel in Gaza. 60 died in Sudan.
These were people trying to save lives.
