It's #WorldOkapiDay! 💙

Okapi's also known as the "forest giraffe" are from the rainforests forests in the Congo Basin.

Although their numbers hard to determine in the wild, experts believe that populations continue to dwindle due to deforestation, poaching, illegal mining and other human threats.

DYK? The type specimen of the Okapi is a belt! The Okapi was described by zoologist PL Sclater in 1901 based on two waist-belts: www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/31590976. Sclater later presented the Zoological Society with this painting: www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/31888385 #WorldOkapiDay

Okapis are "forest giraffes" with zebra-striped legs and 18-inch purple tongues that can clean their own eyes and ears! These shy, intelligent animals communicate through infrasound and are endangered due to habitat loss and poaching in Congo's rainforests. Fewer than 10,000 remain. #WorldOkapiDay
