Yesterday was #WorldSeagrassDay, @azti.bsky.social is restoring these habitats in the Basque Country. In Butroe estuary we started in 2008 and the system is approaching slowly the good ecological status in 2025: it takes decades to recover degraded systems!

Strange to think that I’ve been working with these indomitable little marine plants on and off for the past ten years now.
The video below was taken from drone, it shows an emerged intertidal eelgrass meadow in South West England criss-crossed with tidal channels.
Eelgrass looks much like the grass on your lawn; except it’s a common species of seagrass found in brackish waters. In British Columbia, up to 80 per cent of commercially important fish and invertebrate species rely on eelgrass at some point in their life cycle.
