Tumblr user nohoperadio: I don't like psychoanalysis, but I remember hearing some psychoanalyst talk a long time ago where he said the goal of the process is to give the patient a sense of the story of their own life such that they "become interested in the plot", and this feels like quite a powerful idea to me, this becoming interested in the plot. It feels like a very different thing from "seeing yourself as a main character", even though it's using almost the same metaphor. Something about the way it positions you as a "reader" as well as the subject, it asks you to bring some curiosity to your situation, it's suggestive of a lens through which to look at things that isn't just measuring the gap between where you are and where you want to be, but also isn't just the stoical acceptance of limitations, it's something a bit more aesthetic and playful than either of those. Something about the way it foregrounds the fact that things happen to you outside of your control but doesn't just reduce that to a series of obstacles in your way. Idk it feels like there's something useful in there, it's better than most platitudes I feel, not sure if I'm getting across why I feel that.
I absolutely love this because: yes, real life writes the plot, but you get to be your own storyteller, and you get to write your story.
