Yellow-Bellied Slider - a turtle - pauses as it strolled back to the main swamp pond in Sandy Creek Environmental Park in Durham, North Carolina. Horizontal image: the turtle has stopped walking, but its head and legs are fully out of its shell, and it appears to be making eye contact with the photographer. The image is shot from eye-level with the turtle, and captures the turtle amidst the leaf litter and fresh spring growth of the forest floor. Parts of the bottom and middle of the frame are slightly obscured by extremely out-of-focus forest floor greenery. The turtle is oriented from left to right in the frame, with roughly the front half in frame and with its head near the upper right corner of the frame. The head is raised, and the brilliant yellow green eye with black stripe in the middle is visible. The turtle is in profile, but the nostrils at the very tip of its snout that allow to remain almost entirely submerged and still breathe are visible. It has yellow stripes on the underside of its neck.

Yellow-Bellied Slider

I laid flat out on the ground to get this portrait of a yellow-bellied slider as it strolled back to the main swamp pond in Sandy Creek Environmental Park in Durham, North Carolina.
