Truly, Madly, Jonny: Wicked’s Jonathan Bailey Talks Fame, Wanting Kids, and Returning to the Stage BY VASSI CHAMBERLAIN December 12, 2024 Jonathan Bailey wears Loewe. Fashion editor: Eniola Dare. Photographed by Ben Weller, British Vogue, January 2025. Jonathan Bailey has always flatly refused to pose topless on a shoot. For British Vogue, he relented. How come? “There was this pair of Loewe trousers and I thought, Fucking hell, what an incredible silhouette. No one suggested it, I just knew it was right.” He pauses. “But please don’t mention I said I’m always asked to take my top off.” I plead with him. “OK,” he replies. “It’s the truth.” But why all the prudishness? Didn’t he reveal his naked bum in season one of Netflix’s phenomenally successful Regency romp, Bridgerton? It was quite the performance, I say. Has it been nominated for any awards? “Not yet,” he replies, rolling his eyes. We are lounging on a velvet sofa in an anteroom at London’s Theatre Royal Drury Lane, the location a nod to the Brit’s imminent, post-stratosphere-hitting return to the West End. He was last on the London stage in 2022, in Mike Bartlett’s Cock at the Ambassadors Theatre, already a star, and yet the 36-year-old’s wattage has continued to grow and grow. Any attempt on my part to observe him dispassionately disappears quickly. His dark-haired and unshaven beauty is too intoxicating, as is his style. He is male-model catwalk-ready in pale blue Levi’s, an ivory Sunspel rib-knit short-sleeved polo shirt, off-white slip-on suede Birkenstocks, and beige socks. M&S? “Uniqlo—they’re my favorite holey socks,” he answers, raising a tanned, muscular arm (an Omega De Ville watch dangles from his wrist) to scratch his head. His biceps look like they’ve done time in the gym. “I did that on purpose so you’d notice,” he says cheekily. “I’ve got real gunnage.”
About Bailey; Jonathan Stuart Bailey is an English actor known for his dramatic, comedic, and musical roles on stage and screen. His accolades include a Laurence Olivier Award and a Critics' Choice Television Award, as well as a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award. Born: April 25, 1988 (age 36 years), Wallingford, United Kingdom Height: 5′ 11″ Awards: Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical Upcoming movies: Wicked Part Two, Jurassic World Rebirth Parents: Stuart Bailey Bailey began his career as a child actor in Royal Shakespeare Company productions and by eight was performing as Gavroche in a West End production of Les Misérables. He starred in contemporary plays such as The York Realist in 2018 and Cock in 2022; in classical plays like Othello in 2013 and King Lear in 2017; as well as in musicals, namely the London revival of The Last Five Years in 2016 and the West End gender-swapped revival of Company for which he won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical in 2019. On screen, Bailey starred in the action-adventure series Leonardo (2011–2012) and the musical-comedy Groove High (2012–2013) before becoming known for the crime drama Broadchurch (2013–2015) and the comedy Crashing (2016). He gained wider recognition for his roles in the Regency romance series Bridgerton (2020–present) and the political miniseries Fellow Travelers (2023) which won him a Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actor as well as a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor. Bailey has since played Fiyero in the musical fantasy film Wicked (2024).
QUEERTY: Jonathan Bailey strips down, opens up about his relationship status & wanting kids “with a man” After previously disclosing he’s a thalassomanic man, Jonathan Bailey has now given one of his most revealing interviews ever. While the 36-year-old Wicked hunk has been doing the rounds promoting the blockbuster musical, it’s a wide-ranging sit-down with British Vogue that got the out actor to bare more than his clothes. Although he does that too in the stunning visuals from the editorial shoot. In fact, while he normally doesn’t go shirtless for magazine spreads, Bailey was the one who insisted on baring his musculature torso this time around. “There was this pair of Loewe trousers and I thought, ‘F**king hell, what an incredible silhouette,” he told the outlet. “No one suggested it, I just knew it was right.” Are there pants in this photo? Hadn’t noticed. Beyond his stellar physique, Bailey delved into his dating history as he discussed a two-year relationship with a woman in his early 20s just prior to coming out. “It’s interesting with the binary, where you’re perceived to be either this or that,” he said. “That’s how I saw it at the time, but there are so many nuances to it. My experience of that relationship was not that I was in the shadows. She remains one of my best friends.” As far as the men in his past, Bailey revealed he’s not shy about PDAs, while also noting how queer couples often have to negotiate uncomfortable reactions when expressing the simplest pleasures that straights take for granted. “I’ve always been a confident hand-holder in relationships,” he added. “I had a boyfriend who wasn’t experienced at holding hands in public. We got heckled in London. But that kind of behavior is now outweighed by the smiles you get.” CONTINUED: See next image’s alt text…
Jonathan Bailey is My Crush O’ Week! #HolyHotnessBatman 🦇🔥 QUEERTY story (continued)… However, his lips were sealed tight when writer Vassi Chamberlain asked if he was currently dating anyone. “Not discussing that,” Bailey replied “sharply,” noted Chamberlain. Ok, so he’s keeping his private life private, which is a breath of fresh air considering that sort of retort has most-often been relegated for the use by closeted stars. But Bailey is loud and proud and now one of the most in-demand actors gay or straight, so keeping his personal relationships under wraps doesn’t come off as some orchestrated career move. And while he’s not divulging on the state of his love life, Bailey definitely sees children in his future. “Yes, it’s such a privilege for a man. But I can’t bring children into my lifestyle now,” he shared, noting it was due to his busy work schedule. “I want to make sure I’m going to be present. I’m reading books on adoption.” But Bailey doesn’t want to be a single dad and is keeping his options opened: “I might coparent with a woman, but I’m thinking it will be with a man.” His pleading the fifth on his dating life just got more curious. No doubt Bailey’s daddy era will be epic. 🍌💦💦💦
