In 2006 and 2007, Radek Dabrowski and Michel Meijer photographed urban landscapes in Berlin containing buildings well-known to the public. The aim was to give a vivid and natural impression of these buildings in a high technical quality. To achieve that goal, they chose not to exclude people from the photos. In the photos, the public, which walks around in and around the photographed building, function as extras and the building as the main character. This is not to say that the role of the people in the photo is unimportant. On the contrary: they contribute an important part to the atmosphere in the photo and reflect who the buildings are intended for: people. High technical quality and a high degree of freedom in photographic possibilities resulted in the use of a technical camera with accompanying lenses.
A key feature and the reason for the many photographic capabilities of the technical camera is that the front and back of the camera can move independently of each other. The front is the surface to which the lens is mounted and the back is the surface to which the light-sensitive layer is mounted. This can be a sensor or film material. By sliding and tilting the front and/or the back, the perspective in the photo can be changed.
The light-sensitive layer, in this case film material, in the camera that Radek Dabrowski and Michel Meijer used had a size of 4 x 5 inches. That is 10 x 12.5 cm. That's almost the same size as a postcard. This is much larger than the size in common photo cameras of 24 x 36 mm. And therefore makes it possible to take photos with much more detail. For high detail reproduction, a large film surface alone is not enough. A high-quality lens is equally important. And that too was what Radek Dabrowski and Michel Meijer had at their disposal.
