First attempt at spinning thread for #embroidery or #sashiko with some gorgeous golden eri silk top #spinSky. I’ll definitely have to ply this a few times!

Supporting local businesses run by folx in the community is an important part of this - I’m hoping to make it in soon! 🧶

Like so many creative activities historically practiced by women and people of color, quilting was once relegated to the realm of the “decorative” and perceived as less important than fine art. [🧵1/3]

Claiming zero invention credit; merely sharing a technique that works well for me in the folk art tradition

Scraps of orange yarn (multiple shades) split by ply on a multicolored wooden table. The yarn is about one inch in length.

Chaos 🧶- the process! I add misc scraps of yarn/thread/roving/fabric to this bowl, and when I’m feeling like some chaotic spinning is in order, I pick coordinating bits, shred em up, and add them into the drafting triangle of singles as I go for tweedy pizazz #infoShare #spinSky #creativeReuse

Tonight’s spinning solace: making more of what I’m calling the “chaos ply” of the 3-ply yarn I’m working on. I make yarn this way because it’s slow and soothing and I want unique results that show it was made by hand 🧶 #spinSky #slowCraft

Looking forward to hearing more of these stories! We know this time is coming with my dad (he is living with early onset dementia), but it’s not here yet. So glad to have found another resource

Yes it is! I find it works really well for mends on stretchy things

Moi! I quite enjoy the descriptive aspect, actually

(I wish there was an edit option for the 1-2 times I’ve forgotten due to squirrel brain 🐿️)

Curing the Monday blues by plying the indigo-dyed single from yesterday with more naturally colored Jacob fleece into a sumptuous & chaotic marled 3-ply. Planning to knit the cabled #darkAcademia inspired #sweaterVest of my dreams! But first - washing and thwacking #spinSky #shaveEmToSaveEm

#februARTy #socks the first pair of socks I ever made as a baby knitter! Probably about 16 years ago? They’re too small now and need some mending, but I’m just as into the tranquil greens as I was back then 💚 🧶 🧦

Very fluffy cat licks her lips, standing over a pile of discarded bones from Ezells, a black owned fried chicken restaurant

I adopted Ganymede with no teeth- she was found wandering the streets of Seattle with half missing and the others falling out. She regularly engages in antics such as trying to steal porkchops the size of her head and whatever was going on here (note: the cat did not consume any chicken bones 🍗)

Watercolor painted turquoise feather with embroidery and ink details

For #februArty #turquoise - a closeup of a feather inspired by the Steller’s jay I made from embroidered watercolor. Currently displayed at the PNW Quilt and Fiber Arts Museum! They’re one of my favorite birds to see so I had to include them in my #corvid project 🪶

Backside of log cabin quilt block. Many tidy machine stitches can be seen

3/3 I’m working on my quilt detective skills, but I can say these blocks are machine stitched and constructed by someone with a fine eye for detail. I don’t know how they got to the shop, but I’m grateful to honor the work of the unknown artist & I like to think they’re glad their work is in use

2/3 The blocks featured here are a very traditional Log Cabin (originating in the 1860s). I picked them up at the PNW Quilt and Fiber Arts Museum. The red square in the center represents a cozy hearth, and the yellow(ish) one represents a window. #QuiltHistory #LogCabin
