Quote: After an initial, kindly phone consultation, I was accepted to see the Senior Therapeutic Radiographer, who decided, even after thirty years since my radiotherapy, that she could help. I hadn’t realised that Pelvic Radiation Disease was a ‘thing’, and she gave me gentle support and told me about PRDA. Just the acknowledgment that I wasn’t just another old woman suffering incontinence, that there was indeed an association to help and inform, was a comfort.
Symptoms of #PelvicRadiationDisease can emerge months, years, or even decades after radiotherapy.

“It’s so important that we have long-term plans to help cancer survivors fit into normal life and achieve the best possible quality of life.” Amy - living with PRD
Surviving cancer isn’t just about a cure, it’s about living well after treatment. Many people struggle with late effects. The National Cancer Plan must recognise #PelvicRadiationDisease and provide support shaped by lived experience.

“I often see patients who were unprepared for new symptoms and the significant impact these have on quality of life.” Dr Jan Bornschein, Consultant Gastroenterologist and PRDA Medical Adviser
Many people aren’t prepared for the lasting effects of pelvic radiotherapy, which can affect daily life. The PRDA is calling for consistent, compassionate, patient-focused care.

This #WorldCancerDay we’re calling for cancer care that puts people first, not just during treatment, but long after it ends.
Person-centred care must include long-term survivorship support and proper provision of late effects services.

New report reveals that the majority of people with late effects can't access specialist services due to limited availability across the UK.
The NHS can better meet the long-term needs of cancer survivors by investing further in late effects services.
