Snow weighing down the tufted tops of ornamental grass under an overcast sky turned icy blue by the last light of day.

It's #BlueSkyMonday. This is the time of year when everything is dead or dormant but not yet bleached of all color. It softens the blow of the cold hitting.

The stipe of this Red Pinwheel fungi is a dark burgundy from emergence to cap. Just a little distance below the cap is a grouping of 21 visible insect-egg slime mold that are a nice dark amber coloration and attached to the stipe by stems that appear to be around the same length as the length of the fruiting body. Back to the fungi, The gills are an off-white and don't appear to be too crowded. This is a composite focus stack of 15 different images taken with my Canon 70D DSLR

This was a fun find today!

I believe these are Insect-egg slim mold, Leocarpus fragilis, hanging out on the upper reaches of the stipe of this likely Red Pinwheel fungi, Marasmius plicatulus.

Fruiting bodies of slime mold on wood. They are a continuous carpet of yellow balls, filling every crevice in wood like corn on the cob. In some other cracks, orange balls appear. It looks festive and colorful.

Announcement + bonus 🍄‍🟫📷: Brittlestems, young and old.

I’ll still be posting my fungus photos here but I’m going to be posting much more on my FungiFanatic Patreon account (despite having no subscribers, lol). I want an archive of my photos and a place to write more about them. ♥️🍄 #fungifriends

Strawberries and Cream is a toothed fungi. It does not have gills on the underside of cap, instead has minute 'teeth' from which spores are created/dispersed. Overall this fungi is colored a white with pink tones. The cap be anywhere from one inch to six inch in diameter. Height varies from one to three inches in height. Usually solitary, found on the forest floor under conifers. Widespread in the Pacific Northwest. Look for it growing late summer into fall.
Reference: Mushrooms of Cascadia by N. Siegel and C. Schwarz (2024).

Some fungi 'sweat' during metabolism, process is named guttation. A toothed fungi by the name Strawberries and Cream (Hydnellum peckii) is a perfect example. In this case the 'sweat' appears as #blood droplets on the cap. Highly apropos for #NightmareNov post.

I found an old log in the woods that was covered in various mosses, algae, and these whitish spikes. This is a close up, revealing tiny finger-like fungi.

Be looking for Cortinarius #mushrooms now. You'll be rewarded with hues of purple, blue, orange and brown. Look for telltale signs of ID via silk-like fibers on stem/stipe that usually have an orange spore coating. Get outside with this discovery in mind; it's a blast!

The sawn edge of a small birch log. Growing from it are several striated brackets, long since turned green and fuzzy, and a scattering of small dark nodules like chocolate-covered peanuts.
