#FindsFriday The Peedie Pict! This carved ox phalanax depicts the outline of a man, possibly a #Pictish warrior. It was found at the #IronAge site of Bu Sands on the island of Burray, #Orkney. It's most likely a gaming piece.
Peedie (or peerie) is the Orcadian word for small!

This week on #findsfriday, we have a bronze pin or hasp with two birds, likely pigeons with a ring on the top. The pin is inscribed 'LVCIANVS' and was found on Honey Street in Woodborough, Wiltshire.

Jüngst wurde mir geraten, in meinen Vorlesungen doch Hoffnung & Perspektive zu vermitteln. Gerade künftige Absolventen würden ja mal gebraucht. Aber ich kann das nicht sagen. Nicht mehr. Meine ehrlichsten drei Minuten dazu gab's voriges Semester. Da nun lange Videos gehen, poste ich es hier nochmal.

My photo shows the so-called Clacton Spear point which was found in 1911 in Lower Paleolithic sediments on the foreshore at Clacton-on-Sea, Essex. It is a wooden spear point worked from a yew branch. At the lower end the wood has broken unevenly. At the top end, the wood has been worked so that it tapers to a point, the tip of which has warped into a slight curve. Since it was originally found, the spear point has shrunk and is now 36.7 cm, with a maximum diameter of 36 cm. On display at the Natural History Museum in London.

Sometimes the most unassuming artefacts are utterly incredible!

This piece of wood for example, is a spear point worked from yew wood about 420,000 years ago! 🤯

Known as the Clacton Spear it is the oldest known preserved wooden spear in the world!

Ushabtis are figurines that were buried in tombs and functioned as avatars of the deceased. When read aloud by the deceased's spirit, the spell inscribed on an ushabti's body was thought to animate the figure in the afterlife so that it could perform labor - often agricultural - on behalf of its owner. Some tombs contained hundreds of these small sculptures, each bearing the owner's name and representing the individual in a mummified state. This bluish-green faience ushabti, like most others, is in the form of a mummy with a pharaonic death mask, complete with beard and striped nemes headdress. His arms are crossed and his hands hold what seem to be a hoe and a plow, ready to farm for its master in the afterlife. The spell to animate the figurine is written in hieroglyphics around its wrapped lower torso and legs. Inscription translation: Ankh-Hap son of Ta-di-Hat-Mehtyw (Tadihatmehtyu). These faience Egyptian ushabtis were added to their owner’s tombs to act as servants in the afterlife. Some tombs had as many as one ushabti for every day of the year and another 36 overseers to keep order. 🏺

Nach der deutschen Besetzung der Niederlande wurde die Malerin Marianne Franken antisemitisch verfolgt, nach Westerbork deportiert und starb am 4. April 1945 im KZ Bergen-Belsen.
