Very close! It is a Mediterranean gull, very easily confused with a black-headed gull.

Well done everyone, it is a Mediterranean gull!
They are often confused with the black-headed gull, but are slightly larger with a shorter, heavier beak. In summer they have a jet black hood covering their head - much darker than the mask of a black-headed gull, which is chocolate brown.

We’ve spotted lots of solitary bees buzzing around the habitat scrapes at #DroppingWellFarm recently 🐝🌿

These scrapes were created as part of the site’s management plan to help it transition into heathland and it’s amazing to see wildlife already making the most of them.πŸ’š

Well done everyone! Ion spotted a holly blue butterfly in his garden. Holly blues are the first blue butterfly to emerge in spring, and a second generation appears in summer. Attract them to your garden by planting nectar-rich borders for them to feed along πŸ’™πŸŒΏπŸ¦‹

A close up photo of a cluster of bright yellow cowslip flowers on a stem

It is of course the beautiful bright yellow cowslip! It is thought that the name cowslip may have originated from the name 'cow-slop' (i.e. cowpat), in reference to its preference for meadow habitat often used by cattle. Cowslips are the county flower of #Worcestershire 🌼

Beautiful blackthorn blossom looking like a soft cloud (if it weren’t for the thorns πŸ˜…) at #LowerSmiteFarm last week 🌸☁

Not only does blackthorn in our hedgerows provide egg-laying habitat for brown hairstreak butterflies, it’s also an important early nectar source for solitary bees. πŸŒžπŸ¦‹πŸ
