Ansteckung erfolgt durch die Aufnahme von salmonellenhaltigen Lebensmitteln, v.a. durch Eier & Eiprodukte, Geflügel, Fleisch & Milcherzeugnisse sowie Speiseeis. Für eine Infektion sind viele Bakterien notwendig. Diese hohe Keimzahl kann bei falscher Lagerung von Lebensmitteln leicht erreicht werden.

Ansteckung mit Salmonellen vermeiden: Kühlkette einhalten! Halte rohe Lebensmittel von Essfertigem z. B. Salat, Gemüse oder fertig gegarten Speisen fern! Hände waschen!

Salmonellen sind in Österreich die zweithäufigsten Durchfallerreger, die hauptsächlich durch Lebensmittel übertragen werden. Eine Erkrankung kommt normalerweise nur zustande, wenn relativ große Bakterienmengen aufgenommen werden. Bei falscher Lagerung vermehren sie sich bei Raumtemperatur schnell.
