Autonomous, behavior-adaptive flight is one tool we can use to ensure researchers do not disturb the ecosystems we study and protect. I would love to hear how you think about responsible conservation tech use - what has worked well? Can we do better? Drop your thoughts below!

New paper!
We built an edge-native, behavior-adaptive drone system to detect group-level vigilance in real time to avoid stressing wildlife while improving data.
Started with 3 weeks of manual piloting in Kenya (KABR) → WildWing → now real-time behavior monitoring.
Presenting today at #SEC25!
🚁🦓 Heading to DC for #SEC25!
Sharing new work on behavior-adaptive wildlife drones, building on KABR + WildWing + fieldwork in Kenya & Ohio
Big question we’re tackling: how do we know when drones affect animal behavior?
More soon 👀
How do we do more with biodiversity data we've already collected?
I gave a TED Talk on scientific discovery in ecological databases at a joint TED Countdown and Bezos Earth Fund event for #NYClimateWeek this year, and it's now live!

SmartWilds is just the start! Future releases will add GPS tracks, citizen-science data, and multi-season coverage. Big thanks to our amazing team + funders: the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium & The Wilds, NSF ICICLE AI Institute, Imageomics Institute, and the AI & Biodiversity Change Global Center
Our pilot covered 4 days across a 220-acre pasture, monitoring Pere David’s deer, Sichuan takin, Przewalski’s horses, and local Ohio wildlife. Each modality captures different ecological signals: land use, species detection, behavior, habitat change.

SmartWilds is out in the wild at the Imageomics Workshop at NeurIPS! 🐾📡
So excited to share our first multimodal dataset with The Wilds in Ohio, including drone imagery, camera traps, and bioacoustics all synced in time + space for AI + ecology research.
If you’re at NeurIPS, come say hi!
Many thanks to our coauthors & collaborators!

TL;DR: Analyze in place, record what matters, fly smarter.
Key takeaways:
• Plan for the model (altitude/speed/oblique).
• Do inference at the edge to triage events.
• Use video-native models for behavior (not just detection).
• Semi-autonomous flights standardize data & reduce disturbance.
New paper: Drones & Computer Vision for Collective Animal Behavior 🐾
We show how edge AI + smart mission design turn drone footage into real-time behavior insights—with less disturbance.
