New paper on common cuckoo behaviour is out! When cuckoo females parasitize a nest, they always take an egg out. And we found that they strongly prefer red over green experimental eggs. Check what we think about it: doi.org/10.1016/j.be...

Paul Dufour- Understanding bird migration through abnormal movements
Paul Dufour- Understanding bird migration through abnormal movements YouTube video by EGI Oxford

Wonderful seminar today by @pauldufour80.bsky.social on how vagrancy in birds can help us understand aspects of bird migration! Particularly interesting to see the altitude Richard’s Pipits reach each night during migration (27:50)

Now also on YouTube!

📡 Woodcock male Yeti is back! 🪶

Last data were from 17 Sept at Jizerka. It turns out he wintered near Helston, UK 🇬🇧!
He left on 10 March and via 🇫🇷🇧🇪🇩🇪 reached the Czech Republic on 14 March.
📍Now he is near Raspenava, close to “home”.

Sadly, the remains of M0 were found there on 16 Feb 2026 (likely taken by a domestic 😼).

Still, the record is very valuable: it shows that some Black Redstarts wintering in Czechia can move hundreds of km within the same winter.

👀 If you see a colour-ringed bird, please report it! 🙏

One bird, L5, was seen again at the same place on 20 Feb 2026.

But M0 seemed to have vanished completely — until an unexpected report arrived from Austria!

The bird had travelled 382 km southwest of Brno to the Alpine village of Iselsberg (East Tyrol). 🧵👇

A winter journey from Brno to the Alps 🐦⛰️

On 2 Dec 2025, we colour-ringed two young Black Redstarts at a brownfield site in Brno (Czechia): L5 and M0.

Both birds disappeared soon afterwards.
Then something unexpected happened… 🧵👇

🐦📡 The male woodcock Xixao from the Brdy Mountains is back. Until the end of February he stayed in the forests of Normandy 🇫🇷.
He started his migration on Feb 28, which took him 4 nights, flying each evening from 18:00 until after 2:00 a.m. 🌙

A climate-mediated ecological cascade leads to salmonellosis outbreaks in the United States. Temperature differences in successive summers are associated with differences in tree cone production in high-elevation and high-latitude forests (Top row), such that a warm summer followed by a cold summer is associated with a drop in cone production the following year (Top Right panel). Cone production is negatively associated with facultative bird migrations (irruptions) of eight seed-eating species (Middle row), such that when cone numbers are low, birds are more likely to irrupt in large numbers (Middle row, Right panel). When irruptions of pine siskins (S. pinus) occur, more songbirds are often found infected with, or dead from, salmonellosis (Bottom Right panel).
