Townhall clock or Moschatel just coming into flower 🥰. A musk-scented flower of ancient woodlands. Each stem bears five flowers, one on the top & one on each of the four side faces of a 'clock'. Its name comes from Italian 'moscato' for musk.

Wonderful
Wild daffodil were once a common sight in the countryside. Today it’s a rarer sight. They create a stunning display with delicate blooms seen in shaded ancient woodlands or damp meadows 🌿 In Wales it's known as ‘cenhinen Bedr’ (Peter’s leek) & is a cherished national symbol. @bsbibotany.bsky.social
A fitting floral display for Mothering Sunday or 'Mother's Day' as it's evolved into. A day to celebrate mothers with flowers Purple saxifrage comes into flower astonishingly early. There was still snow on the ledges around these flowers in Snowdonia #wildflowers #wildflowerhour #alpineflowers
🌿 Hazel in bloom. Hazel flowers long before its leaves appear. Its yellow dangling catkins, 'lamb’s tails', are the male flowers.
Look closely & you’ll see tiny female flowers too: small buds with delicate crimson-red threads that catch the pollen. #Hazel #Botany #Flowers #BritishWildlife #Nature
On World Book Day we celebrate the power of books to inspire curiosity & adventure. My book on geology & flowers of the Alps was written with that spirit in mind, to encourage readers to explore, travel & learn about central Europe’s remarkable mountain range. tinyurl.com/2rb3mw6f

The Cairngorm plateau is one of the most extreme and brutal environments for any plant to survive in Britain. Yet this sub-arctic habitat is full of plants thriving in these conditions. Pictured here are Trailing Azalea with reddish, winter leaves, Fir Clubmoss and Woolly Hair-moss

Alpine flowers are in the absolute prime in the Swiss Alps this week. Mega diversity, pollinators having a feast
A couple of Helleborine - Red & Dark-red - along with Herb Paris and Burnt-tip orchid. Snapping a few of the amazing alpine flowers whilst guiding in the Swiss Alps #wildflowerhour @europeanorchids.bsky.social #helleborine #wildflowers
Heading to the Alps this summer? There's fresh, new stock of The Alps - A Natural Companion in Chamonix Maison De La Presse
A few of the alpine flowers peaking in the Swiss Alps this week. All of which I've recently seen in the Scottish Highlands too. Yellow oxytropis, Alpine bartsia, small-white orchid & Alpine mouse-ear #wildflowerhour #wildflowers
An alpine botany trip at home in the UK. The Scottish Highlands are home to the finest collections of arctic-alpine plants in the UK. I was joined by a brilliant young botanist, @mattrjones.bsky.social a real inspiration to explore the mountains with. We recorded many of the rarest montane species.
My trip to the Highlands began on Ben Nevis looking for awesome alpines. I found Tufted saxifrage, arctic mouse-ear & Sibbaldia in flower. All incredibly special #wildflowers @bsbibotany.bsky.social @bsbiscotland.bsky.social
Sooo many incredible plants from a weekend botanising with @natureswork.bsky.social in Scotland. Here's a few of the specials from Ben Lawers. Rock Speedwell is one I've missed on my previous visits so gorgeous to see it flowering in great numbers #wildflowerhour @bsbiscotland.bsky.social
Not been anywhere urban this week #urbanplants I've been mostly in the Highlands of #Scotland looking for alpines with @mattrjones.bsky.social and we found some stunning saxifrages @wildflowerhour.bsky.social #wildflowerhour #alpines
Lycopodiella inundata
I revisited a site where I stumbled upon Marsh clubmoss many years ago in Snowdonia. This nationally endangered plant is still doing well at this site @plantlifeuk.bsky.social @cofnod.org.uk @bsbibotany.bsky.social
It's not everyday you come face to face with a carnivorous plant! Lesser bladderwort is less well known than other carnivorous plants like sundews & butterworts. They rely on digesting insects for nutrition but use suction traps (bladders) to capture their prey! @bsbibotany.bsky.social #wildflowers
