Uk and France agree new treaty on small boat crossings
(Nb the article fails to mention the recent drop in numbers of small boat crossings, giving the false impression they are still rising)

A male blackcap (pale bird with a black head) singing on a green branch with a green background of vegetation.
A goldfinch (browny bird with gold wing stripe and red head) on a thistle top.
A kestrel (light brown raptor with a grey head) on a perch looking out over a meadow.
A wren (tiny brown bird with a cocked tail) on a stub of branch with a green background of blurred vegetation.
Here's some of the birds I've seen/heard from my bedroom window that have had a positive effect on my mental health. I'd be so grateful if you could help me gather a group of people together who enjoy watching/hearing birds out of their windows by sharing & adding your #birdingfrombed stories.🧵1/4
"This is an important thing to think about."
A new crowdfunding campaign has been launched in an effort to support conservation work for the Critically Endangered North Atlantic Right Whale, with fewer than 400 individuals thought to remain:
An interesting legal development, and an example of why nature protection legislation matters.
Yep, the NE staff I know are also very concerned about the SSSI freeze.
Most N.E. staff I’ve met are genuinely concerned about this as they are passionate about nature, for years their funding to carry out the work they are tasked with has been reduced leading to great frustration and stress beyond healthy levels. Often, evidence for SSSI’s exists, funding it is key
England’s wildlife watchdog ‘has stopped designating special sites for protection’
Excellent report by @wildjustice.bsky.social on how Natural England has frozen its SSSI designation programme - covered by @patrickbarkham.bsky.social:
www.theguardian.com/environment/...
Of 22 sites being held on a waiting list, before designation, 14 were at risk from development. That's 64% of potential SSSI's, and the wildlife living within them, at risk of being lost.

NEW REPORT: Today we publish Unprotected Nature, a report revealing Natural England's failure to designate any new protected sites.

Damning report into Natural England’s failure to designate any new SSSIs since 2023.
This is exactly the kind of policy that should be left to headteachers, who know what will work best for their own school (and almost all have strict curbs on phones anyway). But the government wants the headline.
Following on from last week's bs "investigation" which absolutely misrepresented the scale and nature of people potentially claiming asylum under false grounds, it is exceptionally hard to see how this is in any way acceptable and not blatant bias. This is an advert not a news piece.
I checked this too.

I'm not joking when I say mRNA technology is more important than "AI" and it's a tragedy we're throwing billions into one while our government is aggressively defunding the other.
Once again. These people do not want freedom of speech, they want the freedom to monolog without criticism.
They're going to end the freedom of speech of students to protest bigoted speakers they disagree with.

We need to overwhelm the BBC with complaints about this. This is the most egregious breach of their own impartiality guidelines I can remember. They’re no longer even trying to hide it.

Thousands have objected to plans to dump dredged sediment in a protected marine area says @sussexwildlife.bsky.social It risks harming the nationally important wildlife hotspot along the coast. Brighton Marina says dredging is needed to make the site safe for boats.
It was helpful of Palantir to name themselves after a sophisticated surveillance device that utterly corrupted and demoralised those who came to rely upon it. Just in case we were at all unclear on what they were up to.
Not only should we not be handing out contracts to these ghouls, they should be a proscribed organisation.
Today is the 2 year anniversary of when I met the Ravens. They just checked me out from a distance then! Here is some of my fav footage: them courting, feeding each other, barrel rolling and some of their vocalisations. They are the most amazing birds and I am so lucky to have them!
Congrats and thanks Trevor Girling for finding this stunning Ross’s Gull yesterday morning and breaking news live. A first for Norfolk for me and undoubtedly Bird of the Year so far! Thanks too, Matt Lonsdale, for relocating in a field inland, shortly after it left the coast. #NorfolkBirding

For the first time in decades, consensus broke at the UN Commission on the Status of Women. The United States cast the lone “no” vote on a document aimed at improving justice systems for women and girls worldwide. Misogyny is the official policy of the US under Trump.
“In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment & counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back to a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.”
IT SAVES PUBLIC MONEY to house people.
It’s as if the Iran war was fought to sustain the Russian economy. Lifting sanctions for Russians does nothing for Americans. It just makes it easier for Russia to continue its war in Ukraine.
