A photograph of a Common Crane looking towards the camera with the words: "Record year for Scotland's tallest bird!"

The Crane, Scotland's tallest bird, had a record breeding season in 2025!

After going extinct in Scotland due to habitat loss and hunting around 400 years ago, Cranes naturally recolonised an area of Aberdeenshire and first attempted breeding in 2012.

Finally, some sun and the Solway was like a Mill Pond. A quick look at Roscarrol for Scoter but only 7 Common on the sea closer enough to view. A calling Chiff was NFY. #birdingscotland @dgbirdnews.bsky.social

Wigtown Wetland D&G

A grim day at Wigtown wetland D&G last weekend. 19 Whoopers on the lagoon out from the hide. A few Barnies on the merse being spooked by the local Kites. A fly past by the male Hen Harrier. A peregrine had a little disagreement and starred each other out on a drystone dyke.#birdingscotland

news that the GWT had been relocated at Garlieston D&G meant a quick run down as it was about 20years since my last one and first for Scotland. Dipped it late last year. After a bit of a search found it resting on the water edge as tide receded. @dgbirdnews.bsky.social #Birdingscotland #rarebirdsuk
