"The Big Bang Theory" and Academic Reality And trying to figure out their job titles.

For better or for worse, "The Big Bang Theory" (2007-2019) is still a reigning cultural depiction of #womeninSTEM and science careers in general. Read Part I below, Part II drops Thursday!!

Undergrad research was the best thing I did in undergrad. I was happier, mor connected, my grades improved, and I was learning so much I couldn't learn in the classroom.

Toxic Algorithms: Hashtags in Science Communication SciComm tools or harbingers of destruction?

Official health institutions, universities, and academic journals are poor at connecting with people outside their “bubble”. Although they have large followings, these audiences often show low engagement and are unlikely to disseminate the content.

Indeed people want to be aesthetically satisfied and feel a sense of care and connection on social media spaces when seeking health info.

Paper mills, the open-access craze (costing $1000s to publish), and now the preprint craze of the 2020s. But who is really ‘winning’ in all this? Not the authors. #sciencepublishing #academia #STEM #feministscience

7 Years Single Today Things got worse before they got better. And how I ended up on Medicaid.

I wrote about this on my #substack

This really has had negative ramifications for my career as I struggle to access networking spaces that other people can. Being single is not for the faint of heart. #singleladies

We need networks of care and socializing for everyone. As a 35 year old single woman the social ostracization and financial struggles are real. You have to be a really strong person and really independent and really prioritize peace to be single sometimes.

Very humbling to see 25 yr old grad students with romantic partners getting invited by faculty to personal events while I’ve never received such invitations. The only time I was in a relationship was for 6 months in grad school and it was night and day different how I was treated #academichatter

The Myth of Open-Access Publishing Why pay $5000 to publish when I could put it on a preprint server?

Welp legacy publications like you are doing nothing to solve this huge cost burden either. Hence why everyone is migrating to preprint servers which have 0 vetting.

Yeah it's poorly trained on like random reddit threads and copyrighted books on the Inernet. It needs to be trained on specific data sets for whatever tasks you are trying to solve.

Yeah it has the power that human raters can't have--when it comes to classification and processing very large volumes of data. But it has low accuracy right now and is being used to write emails not like cure cancer.

OMG! Wow! I am an All in the Family Fan, and Archie Bunker did predict Regan as president in the 1970s.

Agree peer review is broken and relies on people unaffiliated with the journal.

These journals need A) a statistics checker to make sure the data analysis is ok and B) strong editor/fact checker who can actually do more than just yell at us over misplaced commas.

The Myth of Open-Access Publishing Why pay $5000 to publish when I could put it on a preprint server?

#STEM research publishing has shifted wildly in the past 20 years. The open-access craze of the 2010s is now thee preprint craze of the 2020s. #academichatter #feministscience #academicpublishing

It's so interesting because I grew up in the Midwest but your posts resonate with a lot of the dynamics I saw in the Midwest too.

WELL NOW, would you look at that?

A massive, 4-YEAR-LONG study of NEARLY 30 MILLION people in France found that individuals who received a COVID-19 mRNA vaccine had a 74% LOWER risk of death from severe COVID-19 compared to unvaccinated individuals and ZERO increased risk of all-cause mortality.

But some of the worst bullying I've gotten on social media was from women #STEM influencers who are threatened by my very well-researched and written articles. Odd since they are highly educated like masters degree and up. #substack #instagram #academichatter

They are scared of me because I'm making real well researched points and gaining attention and can topple thier brands.

There’s not much on bullying dynamics on social media by big influencers. The few studies I find look at how influencers themselves are bullied. But influencers are just ‘queen bees’ like in high school and have their sycophants do thier dirty work

Anyway now nobody can comment on instagram unless they follow me and I hard blocked so many accounts since I was getting swamped with so many hate messages. Hopefully in a few weeks it'll settle down and I can change the settings againg, but sorry good people for now.

I reported her as harassing me to Instagram, so we’ll see what happens. I hope Instagram doesn't turn around and ban me since she's Darvo'ing me. But am inspired to write a post called “Mean Girl social media” in which influencers with 10s of thousands of followers go after the little guy critics.

Update on the Queen Bee women in STEM post from yesterday.

This STEM influencer then publicly shamed me by creating a post called ‘hate comments’ I got from the post of yesterday and screenshotted my post with my username and said I was ‘bean soup theory’ whatever that means. #academichatter
