Rain, New Year's Eve
By: Maggie Smith

The rain is a broken piano, playing the same note over and over.
My five-year-old said that.
Already she knows loving the world means loving the wobbles
you can't shim, the creaks you can't oil silent-the jerry-rigged parts,
MacGyvered with twine and chewing gum.
Let me love the cold rain's plinking.
Let me love the world the way I love
my young son, not only when he cups my face in his sticky hands, but when, roughhousing, he accidentally splits my lip.
Let me love the world like a mother.
Let me be tender when it lets me down.
Let me listen to the rain's one note and hear a beginner's song.

I use avocados in most of the dishes I make (at the last minute to a lot of one-skillet rice based meals as I live and mostly cook alone.) There're some intriguing ideas in this 🧵.

No one saw the Revolution coming out of Minnesota except Prince.

Even a decade after his passing, he still inspires us all. 💜

Mayor Mamdani and a group of children hold hands while running through red tape in a hallway.

For too long, bureaucracy kept 7 child care centers across our city empty — spaces that should have been alive with laughter instead collected dust.

We've run through that red tape. This fall, all 7 will open their doors, bringing an additional 240 free 3-K seats & real relief to working families.

The Lunar Reflection of Mount Fuji
This landscape photograph, titled The Silent Trinity, captures a fleeting celestial alignment over the iconic silhouette of Mount Fuji. Taken by photographer Yuga Kurita, the scene features the moon partially veiled by a soft cloud, positioned directly above the mountain's peak, with the bright point of Venus visible further to the left. In the foreground, a still body of water acts as a mirror, creating a perfect vertical reflection of the mountain, the moon, and a solitary tree that stands prominently on the left bank. The deep blues of the night sky and the dark silhouettes of the forest create a sense of profound stillness and cosmic order.

Graphic with trees that reads “54 million trees planted since 2021”

GREAT NEWS: Since Wisconsin took the Trillion Trees Pledge in 2021, we've planted over 54 million trees across the state, including nearly 12 million in 2025 alone.

Just 5 years in and we're already over halfway to our goal to plant 100 million trees by the end of 2030.

Mysteries, Yes
By Mary Oliver

Truly, we live with mysteries too marvelous to be understood.

How grass can be nourishing in the mouths of the lambs.
How rivers and stones are forever in allegiance with gravity
while we ourselves dream of rising.
How two hands touch and the bonds will never be broken.
How people come, from delight or the scars of damage,
to the comfort of a poem.
Let me keep my distance, always, from those who think they have the answers.
Let me keep company always with those who say
"Look!" and laugh in astonishment, and bow their heads.

This 19th-century biwa, titled Ka-getsu (Flower Moon), is a masterpiece of Japanese musical instrument craftsmanship. The pear-shaped body is crafted from polished wood, featuring four strings that stretch across a central decorative band. This band is exquisitely ornamented with gold leaf and delicate paintings of white cherry blossoms against a dark blue background, depicting a moonlit floral scene. Two crescent-moon-shaped sound holes, or gegentsu, are carved into the upper face, enhancing both the acoustic resonance and the celestial theme of the instrument.

The Infowars news is funny, yes. But more importantly, it is an outright rebuke of Alex Jones' evil.

It's testament to the strength and resilience of the Sandy Hook families who survived this bullshit for more than a decade as well as the Onion, which didn't give up on this for the last 18 months.

A dragon of earth, air, fire, and water protects a glowing seed.

The vibe today ✨️

My art has, traditionally, been non-confrontational. Publishers tend not to want art that can be peceived as overtly aggressive in an oracle deck.

So I err on the side of depicting protective energies. My dragons are benevolent.

Until harm is done.

Ageing: the condition of becoming less serious about all you were once far too serious about and more serious about all that you once undervalued.

Just a thought: How about we stop shaming the poor for buying things that may not be essential, and start shaming the rich for making a profit off things that are essential?

Today in “weird things I never thought I’d be grateful for”: the grocery store in walking distance has no membership or loyalty cards. The listed price is the price. The sale price is for everyone, not just members. No typing in your phone number. No points. No deadnames. Just groceries.

I am not interested in being a person on Instagram, doing collaborative posts with people or filming myself talking to the camera. I want to be a person who fucks off away from the noise and works hard and writes better and better books for the rest of his life and then dies. Why is that not ok?

Hookland has a long tradition of winged-dogs known as Feorhunds. Even the stone representations of them have a reputation for unbidden climbing and flying. Some say the nets hung around St. Agatha at Belford Darrow are to counter their proclivities for zooming around its tower.
