Yet again, a protected bird of prey has been shot in an area dominated by intensive gamebird shooting management. We had hoped the new legislation introduced by the Scottish Parliament last year would help, but clearly there are still those motivated to break the law. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
Earlier in the week, I took a visit to Carsington Water for some waterbird action - a nice first winter female Lesser Scaup providing useful ID comparisons with the local Tufties. Female Ring-necked Duck, GT Northern Diver, RT Diver and Willow Tit was best of the rest.

So our Chancellor believes industry should “focus on getting things built, and stop worrying about the #bats and the #newts”.

The welfare of nature must come above any filming, writes Jennifer Sizeland, who has spent her career in the media industry:
Cold, early trip to Carsington and Ogston today. Not a great photo of the GND as it was too far out for my lens 🥲 @derbyshirebirds.bsky.social #OgstonBirdClub #Redpoll #Kestrel #Stonechat #Snipe

I agree, we shouldn’t be building on an area that was marked for a nature reserve when there are plenty of brown sites that can be used first

Can you help? 📢 We're seeking volunteers to take part in the final Winter Gull Survey (WinGS) on 19 January 2025! Monitoring overwintering populations of gulls in the UK is vital to gain a better understanding of potential declines.❄️ Sign up ➡️ app.bto.org/wings/public... #UKBirding #Ornithology
A screenshot of a social media post from USFWSPacific that reads: "SHE DID IT AGAIN! Wisdom, the world’s oldest known wild bird, is back with a new partner and just laid yet another egg. At an approximate age of 74, the queen of seabirds returned to Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge last week and began interacting with a male." This tweet is paired with an image of two Laysan Albatrosses at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. Wisdom, the oldest known wild bird, is shown alongside her new partner, demonstrating her enduring legacy as a remarkable seabird.
We humbly interrupt your scroll to bring you the news that Wisdom—the world's oldest known wild bird—is breeding again, age 74.
Go on girl. 😍
Got to admit, I’ve never thought about going there, was it the old side?
