Its a good idea, I'm pretty passionate about the physical version launching at the same time a digital.
Not a chance. The game is basically done!
It was due to the way I restore palettes after the zapper hit detection (black screen). Because the player is in the pipe, the "current level" has already switched to the destination level, so that destination palette is loaded instead of the one for the current room.
It's pretty mind-boggling (and a little terrifying) that even after nearly 3 years of playing this game everyday, Beta Testers are still finding significant bugs in Super Sunny World (my upcoming NES game).
In this case, firing the zapper while entering a "pipe"... #nesdev

Unfortunately the output is very different between the 2 ROMs, so nothing obvious there.
I dug through the source a bit, but didn't get very far. It wasn't obvious to me that there was a branch where it would pick this debug level vs the title screen.
Is the 11/30/90 ROM available? I would start by doing a diff between the ROMs and seeing what changed (with the hope that it's minor)
Follow-up question: Are they BFFs?
